Hi everyone! I need your expertise
Right now i'm making $19.50 per hour+ over-time as an oil field mechanic. I work 10 days on 4 off 12 hour days and i have good benefits. I have been thinking about solo long distance truck driving for a while because i prefer to work alone rather than have people around me all the time. I also want to avoid paying rent and bills by living and working in the truck full time for at least 6 months to a year. I have class A CDL with endorsements (hazmat, doubles, triples, and tanker), but only 3 months oil field driving experience. Is it worth it to quite my job for driving? If i live in the truck full time and have no bills, can i save money (a few thoused dollars)? Or is this just a crazy idea of mine? I know living full time in a truck is really tough, but i can do it for good money and not having to deal with other people's BS.
thank you.
Is it worth it?

In my opinion you would be nuts to leave that kind of money and stability. In OTR you will probably work more hours and make half as much money.
To quote one of the recruiters I talked to lately,...."Trucking ca be a very shaty (sp)way to make a living"
On the other hand if you were flipping burgers at mickey d's, I'd say go for it.. -
i agree, if you can handle the oil rigs, stick with it. When you get too old for it, then consider long haul as a retirement job.

I'd switch with you in a heart beat
Good jobs like that are hard to find.

It takes a lot of money to live out here on the road even without any bills. Some people can manage their money however (like me). I manage to save about 1,000 a month but I have been out here for awhile and know the in's and out's. If you can be deciplined with your money then you'd be able to make a go of it. However, it sort of gets in your blood and it would be hard to go back and hold down a regular job so you need to think about that also.

Thanx for the advice everyone. I was thinking of doing this because i'm not American (yet) and i have been hassled by people in this little town in the middle of nowhere. I think i will stick with my job after what you guys said...i will just get ear plugs for their nasty comments about the foreign guy who is "stealing a white guy's job".

I was a kid and they had families to support, I could hardly speak the language (spanish), spent all my money on a fancy car and lived in a dump.
very cliche... -
But as the others stated...no way would I give that job up. -
Lets say you put 70hrs in six or 7 days.
19.50 x 40= $780.00
29.25 x 30= $878.00
$1657.00 < you will not make that kind of money starting as a company driver with no experience.
x 4
$6628
Unless you really hate your job and want to drive big truck. My advice is to get over the hurdle that your having issues with at your present job. You can save alot of money making that kind of money your making now.
