Is McLane a good company to work for?

My husband has been offered a job with McLane Foodservice in New York. He would be delivering to restaurants (Taco Bell, etc). He has heard good things from truck drivers where he presently works (He drives a dedicated route for Swift in UT right now). But, I have read some bad things about the company.

He will be starting out as a substitute driver, so he won't have a schedule, will basically be on call all the time. The hiring lady told him it takes about a year to get hired full time as a senior driver. Starting out he would make an average of 50k/year. Once he becomes a senior driver it's average pay of 70k year. It is a more physical job than other trucking jobs, but he doesn't mind that at all (he's a very physical, hands on type, doesn't mind physical labor).

Anyone previously or presently worked for this company, or know someone who has? Does it depend on location (as I said this is in New York state)?

    Any input is appreciated, thanks!:biggrin_25520:

Well, I applied at McLane In Az. a few years back. The safety guy took time to tell me about the company, running team 24/7 to make deliveries from Tues - Sat with a day off then back out with a shorty and another day off. Some runs were solo. I believe it was paid by the case plus hrly. You do deliver a variety of places, restaurants, c-stores etc. Palletized, lift gate etc. Good equipment. I'd say go for it.

I think they do pay well but like the other driver said it's hard work. Good exercise I guess. Will definitely be a pro a driving too. Some of those stores are a sum bit** to get into!

Don't know that I would pass up the gig he has now to do it. Sounds like he has a pretty good job now. Grass is always greener though.

They told him he would work 4 days/week, have 3 days off/week. He would be gone for 2 days, home for 1, then gone for 2 days again, then home for 2, he would be doing a dedicated account.

Isn't McLane now owned by Wal Mart? I thought I read that a few years ago

My son-in-law drives for Mclane, all night work, 5 days on, 2 days off, he delivers to NYC and all 5 boroughs, has a company supplied lumper, no lift gate, all hand truck work, he makes about $90,000 a year.
