If Caterpillar could compete with Cummins and Detroit performance wise they never would have quit the business.

Dont believe that for a minute! They got out because of all the new emissions regs. that some ####### sitting at a desk in Washington comes up with every other year. It cost them millions every time these people in Washington get the next great idea in their over educated idiot heads. Cats heavy equiptment division is much larger than their truck engine division ever was and it makes money. Cat got out because truck engines were loseing them money with all the reserch and development every couple of years.

Like I said before I own one of each a 05 ISX 500hp 13spd .373 rears and a 06 Acert 18spd 3.55 rears. Yes 50 more hp and 200tq. but the ISX truck is 2500lbs lighter. There is no comparison on performance the cat will run circles around the cummins. The cat has to be about 10,000 lbs heavier before the ISX can keep up. I own both, drive both, work on both would buy a acert over the isx given the choice.
I think the biggest reson cat got out the on-road trucks is there big mouth and pride! They put down EGR so much said they would never use it but in the end with the newest rules and the amount of time they had they could not do it without it. That and all the truck makers have there own engine. Now cummins days may be numbered. IMO thats not a good thing its good when companys have to compete for my bussiness. Next truck I buy will be a glider. I bet you can guess what color the motor will be:biggrin_255:

I agree that Cat is the big hammer but I cant say it will run circles around the cummins. I run an 07 IH 9900I With a 530Hp 1850 TQ, 18 speed, 3.91 rears and 11R 24.5s. Permited for 107,000LBS in NY state. A friend has an 2006 pete with a 550HP 1850TQ Cat, 18 speed, 3.90 rears, 11R 24.5s and 107,000LBS. On a 4 mile grade loaded with in a couple hundred pounds of one another (106,000 and change) he did pass me but barely. Took the whole 4 miles. Only 1 mph differance and Im 20 HP less. I will say the Cummins throttle responce sucks, especially when down shifting. Just my 2 cents.

can somebody tell me something more about this engine hp torque how big they are ? how much horses has engine breake

    ( i am from europe)

we have here 6cil inline meredes engine used in busses and axor ( light and cheap truck) they are up tu 428hp for truck and 456for bus
truck engine has 2100nm ( 1550lb-ft) they are 12.00L and they have really strong engine breake of 612hp @2000rpm this is called "Turbo breake" and it is option for axor

mostly axor dosent have that tubrobreake but they have hidraullic retarder

actros they have v6 12L of 320-476hp (up to 1700lb-ft) and v8 of 16L 510-598hp 2066lbft) and there is a 653hp v8 and 2215lbft for special tractors for heavy loads

and this v6 and v8 are lazy versus competition trucks but have very very very good fuel efficiency (last few years -before(2005/6 the Mercedes V8 spent 15-20% more than competition)

and these days get better and better to go ......

    inline 6
are much stronger in hills .....

in fact, these engines are very easy to maintain there is no common rail and other modern stuff ....

My CAT versus cummins experience is similar to DL550's.

I drove a truck with the same rear ends, same trans etc. Only difference is the one had a 525 cummins with fresh over haul and the other one was a 500 CAT with over 800,000 miles on it. With the same trailer and the same load the CAT would walk ALL OVER the cummins. To the tune of 10+ MPH on the same hill.

To the guy truck shopping try to find a good truck with a C-15 single turbo. Those are more reliable than the twin turbos. And should get a little better mileage.

Running a ten speed it should be close to normal. You should upshift somewhere around 1600 and note where the rpms are as soon as you shift to know a good downshift mark. If it's a puppy dog, you might have to wind her a little more. Listen to the engine and become one grasshopper. :biggrin_2559:

I thought MB was a low rpm unit, most of it's torque was around 1000 RPM.

If that is true, no need to run very high.

But then again, the memory isn't what it was.........

I do remember that I thought the MB engines SUCKED !!!!
