Problem solved. If you look at the photo above that is a pic of the AD-IP purge valve. The black piece is an exhaust port cover. Has 4 screws holding it on. It cages a spring that rests against the bottom of the purge valve. You can put a 1" hose on that cover, clamp it tight, and direct the purged air anywhere you want it to go. Mine doesn't have or need a hose to direct it anywhere. I don't know how in the world it happened but somehow that cover looks like it got smacked by who knows what, looks like a hammer, or maybe if it was dropped on a shop floor. But this leak only started recently so it definitely wasn't dropped on anything. Anyways it was crushed upwards a good 1/4" which, I'm guessing here, caused the spring it caged to crack open the purge all the time making it leak. It sure quit leaking when I put one that wasn't crushed on there. A $10 part. That no-one stocks and had to be special ordered from the Bendix factory. And still hasn't gotten here. But my parts dealer called and said someone brought him an exchange that still had it on and I could have it if I wanted. I didn't even realize this part was the problem even after I had the old air dryer off the truck.
At Fleetpride making the exchange that's when I saw the new one didn't have it so I pulled the cover off the old one and leftwith it and my new unit. When I got home and looked at it I realized I had just bought a $250 air dryer when probably this was my problem. Clearly could see it appeared to have been crushed upwards from the bottom but I didn't notice til I got home after cleaning grease/oil off it and looking closer. But the bolts holding the old air dryer onto the frame it's mounted on twisted off when I removed it anyways so I wasn't going back after the old one, they can have it. Only needs a couple of bolts extracted and cleaned up, will be reman'd like new. Oh well, spent more on worser things I guess. Anyways, before my problem was the truck's compressor would kick on every 4 minutes and air up to 120psi. The air gauges showed no drop in pressure but every 4 minutes the compressor would air to 120psi and stop. Now it can run for who knows how long? I let it run 20 minutes and the air compressor never kicked on to air anything back up. So thanks for your help guys pointing me at least in the right direction. Leak was between the compressor and dryer just like you all said, actually it was the dryer.
So if you have AD-IP leaking out the purge make sure this $10 port cover isn't your problem before you buy a new dryer.... How the #### it got mashed upwards like that I dunno...Last edited: Sep 12, 2014
SAR Thanks this. -
Glad you got it figured out and you weren't out of alot of money. Funny how when things start leaking or making noise a person just dreads trying to chase the problem cause we all know parts for things are so darn expensive anymore and hoping it fixes the problem. In your case it was a cheap fix and glad it worked for ya. Thanks for posting this so others can check similar problems on their air system when it goes on the frits.
