Can you plan your route to have time off in a specific place?

I understand every company is different but I'm not sure if there is a standard or general practice among companies.

I'm an aspiring trucker looking into a career change. I'm interested in the OTR lifestyle but I can't find answers to all of my questions.

Depends on the company. Usually you accrue 1 day off for every 7 worked. Most will frown at taking more than 4 days off because ," our truck can't sit that long" I stay out for months before coming one, but I'll take 3 days off here and there and go rent a car and get a hotel room. As long as the truck is in a secure spot and you don't have a load on it, I don't think any company would care where you took time off.

Now as to a having time off in a specific place, for me it was easy,I had a terminal in the places I wanted to visit. I would time my PM services for the truck at the same time.
It would depend on your companies freight lanes and how they operate and where exactly you want time off

When I worked for Stevens, they would let a truck sit for 6 days before it was a risk to he picked up.

What's so bad about letting a truck sit? From what I understand, they're engineered to be running most of the time but I feel like anything less than a week or 2 wouldn't matter.

Most fleets who run new equipment are still paying for it and that truck not running is costing them money, at least from their perspective.

Sort of like a lease operator. If he takes a week off he still has that weekly truck payment.

If the trucks are sitting, they're not making money.

Most companies don't care where you take time off, but you need to let your dispatcher know a week or two in advance so they can schedule freight in that area.

That makes sense but wouldn't the time off be the same? If I were to take a day off every week for 7 weeks or a week off every 7 weeks, the truck is still sitting 7 days.

Well one day off in a week can be written off more easily than 7 back to back. Often a load has an extra day so you can reset or go by the house. You could run 2500+ miles, day off then 2500+ miles, day off and so forth. With the days spread out the truck is still moving and earning.

Take that week off and that's 2500+ miles that could be earned but arent.

    Does that make sense?

That's true, but not the way a business operates for the most effeciency. The trucking companies stockholders and investors won't stand for it. Some drivers that post on here take a couple or 3 months off at one time to live overseas, but they had that understanding with the company before being hired. They don't keep the same truck though; the truck is reassigned to another driver then when the driver returns from his time off he gets another truck, but not the same one.

Consecutive time off is not the same as one day every 7.. the truck sits less at one every seven.. In a $ sense
