Hi everyone, pretty new here to the forum and have a few questions. I have a transport company and my own authority. I transport racehorses from track to track about six months out of the year which requires two drivers. The other six months my truck sits. I do not have much experience with the traditional style otr trucking or dealing with brokers.
My issue is I run this with my father who is planning on retiring very soon so I will have to hire a full time driver. I cannot expect a driver to sit 6 months out of the year or afford to pay him to and the insurances that go along with it and frankly im tired of sitting as well. What options do I have available? I would prefer to run flatbed and stay in the midwest and southeast? Would I be able to lease on to a company for a team that is only available half the time or would I have to find my own loads independently? I am worried that if I am able to lease on that I would be given the bottom of the barrel type loads. I would rather my equipment sit than waste it for no money. Am I dreaming or is this something that could work?
All of my equipment is currently paid for which should put me ahead of the game as far as not having to run to make a payment.
Thank you for your input!
Is part time independent feasible?

I'll sit 6 months out of the year for you, if you pay me salary...

Talk to the big carriers. I know Swift has a program where they act as an agent for independents with their own authority, and I'm sure the other carriers do, as well.

ha! Id love to if I could afford it.

Any outfit working spot market freight it would be more profitable to only work 6-9 months in any given year. Depending on how good or bad rates are any given year work more, or less.. They're never solid 12 months out of the year. I don't consider myself part time trucker as I'm the only income in my household but we do just fine. Last year I worked 6 months and the year before 7 months. Even at larger carriers with more dependable freight base/rates it's probably not do-able running 12 months straight. Owners take off when rates are no good, the smart ones. LS and Mercer could care less how much you worked. Any smaller outfit that required you to work "x" amount of weeks per year would be a pushy sweatshop treats their contractors like employees kind of place - goes without saying - to be avoided. You need to be upfront with anyone you lease on with that you haul your racehorses for half the year. Insurance and signage issues there maybe IRP. Not insurmountable obstacles just things you need to figure out.
