I doubt a seatbelt is going to protect me if I head-on, 60 mph into a bridge pier... But it doesn't stop me from wearing one.
I could go on, and on about how a gun truly can help protect me in the scenarios you describe, but I will just agree that no single tool will protect you in all situations.
