Is Sage Trucking School worth the effort to go out of NJ to train?

Until recently, I took the wrong advice from the wrong people who weren't even involved in the transportation industry. I've been thinking of getting into trucking and reading a bunch of forums including this one about training/schooling.

Having used a tuition grant from the state to finish my college degree, I'm under the assumption that I cannot take advantage of WIA or other state funded programs to pay for trucking school but I'm going to find out for sure from the Unemployment office this week.

My choices for school: (These are the ones that I've seen threads about in this forum)
    • AAA Trucking, Philadelphia, PA
    • Smith & Solomon, NJ
    • Sage, Allentown, PA or closer location
Does Sage have that good of a reputation to attend or will any school such as Smith & Solomon or AAA Trucking do just a good a job?

Ultimately, I'd like to get a job from Old Dominion, ABF, or a similar company but that might just be me setting higher than achievable goals for a soon to be newbie truck driver.

I will turn 44 this year, have a college degree & I still can't find a job willing to pay me what I'm worth. These are sad times I'm living in.

    Thank you for reading.

I don't know about that school, but you have set a good goal to get on with an LTL carrier. Old Dominion is growing so fast that they've been hiring and training new CDL grads at certain terminals. You used to need 5-10 yrs experience to get on at an LTL, but that's not necessarily true these days. Good luck. Sorry about your degree situation. I've found that I make more money than half of my friends who hold college degrees. The other half are doctors and lawyers.

Ask the schools if Old Dominion hires from them. If so, go with the cheapest one Old Dominion hires from.
A few months ago OD was sending recruiters to some schools.

Old Dominion sent recruiters to Sage school in Indianapolis not too long ago. They may still be doing it.
I think the fact that OD chose that school to recruit from speaks volumes, then again some company's decisions just do not make sense after all is said and done lol

i think that Sage school may be run out of the community college up in Allentown. i wanted to go there a few months back when i had the money.

WIA may still be available to you since it is a separate from the funding they use for normal uni level schooling

Thanks for all your replies, I'll be heading to the unemployment office tomorrow morning to see if I qualify for the state grant. If not, I'll either go the private or community college route since I'm not too keen on the other method.

Do some homework. Call the carriers your interested in find out if they hire graduates.
SAGE is a great school no mater the location. Try to take the course that includes PTDI certificate. That means a lot to some carriers.
