There are more than 500,000 transportation companies operating in the US.... why limit your choices to a dozen or so who have proven, time and time again, that they couldn't care less about the good folks who drive their equipment?

You can find better but you need to get off your duff and go out and look...

I think mainly it's all the stuff you hear about paying dues and prepare to be put through the ringer your first few years in trucking. Expectations are lowered to the point that I see a lot of new people going in expecting subpar pay and treatment.

I don't know what to expect, but I plan to fire at the distant targets first before I start aiming for the broadside of the barn.

Would anyone got to work for another employer knowing that they have a terrible track record just because they will train you?

I bet McDonald's would LOVE to put people to work for $2.50 per hour in return for teaching them to fry a burger and ask 'would you like fries with that?"...

My first full time driving job was with a small 25 unit operation. I had two days of driving experience... no schools to speak of back then. I applied at every trucking terminal I could find... only one gave me a chance.. the newspaper ad read "Truck driver wanted. Must have own tools."

    I had tools...

The difference from then and now is I got treated fairly... got the same pay as the other guys. Did the same work. I was grateful to get a chance... I didn't owe the carrier $7K for training.

There are still companies like this out there... I'm leased to one right now. My last carrier was the same way. There are two more in my little home town who will also train and nurture a new guy... but you have to forget the internet and those recruiting ads.

One of our drivers came from the ready-mix business... all that experience means little to the big carriers but this guy is our top earner right now. He made over $63,000 in 2010, got a $9,000.00 CASH bonus and gets free health insurance. Hard to beat... but you have to look...
