Is teams worth it as a company driver?

    Unless you run team for:
    • an LTL carrier, or
    • a cryo carrier
....then no, it's not really worth it; the money really isn't worth the extra hassle/headache....in most cases.

The above-listed fleets....however....do in fact pay teams quite well. With them...it's probably worth a second (or even third) look.

Isn't it split pay? Let's say the pay is $0.80 per mile for every mile the truck drives, doesn't each driver only get $0.40 of it?

I've heard about reefer getting longer hauls but doesn't it also have a lot of detention time? That would really irk me if I was team driving.

Detention time never bothered me because I received hourly pay during that time. I received stop pay + hourly pay.

Lets say a team runs 5000 miles, splitting .80 cpm
You would be paid .40 x 5000 which equals $2000.00
Your team mate would also receive $2000.00

That's what I thought. I suppose it might make sense for a newer driver to team for a company. The starting CPM is pretty low, so the difference between solo and team pay would be more pronounced. But after a year or two of driving, I don't see why anyone would team as a company driver unless it's with a spouse or someone else putting money into the same house.

Like you said, if a team driver gets $0.40 CPM off an $0.80 CPM split on 5,000 miles per week, that's $2,000 gross. If the same driver did 2,500 miles solo for $0.50 CPM, that's $1,250. That's an extra $750 teaming. But the higher that solo CPM goes, the smaller the difference becomes.

As for detention times, I see your point about hourly pay. But would a company that offers it still pay a driver hourly if it's their turn in the sleeper? If not, that negates the whole point of teaming, which is getting paid while your codriver works.

I've only teamed one time. That was just to do a favor for the company to get a few loads quickly from Nashville to Seattle. We both received stop pay and hourly pay at the shipper and receiver.
Some drivers like teaming, but I'm not one of them.

When you go to team driving from solo driving, you will miss "doing it your way". With team, truck only stops to fuel and load/unload. You are sharing the load experience. With solo, YOU make all the decisions but share them when running team. You want that burger real soon, but other driver won't be hungry for another 2 hrs ! And he's driving, so gotta' settle for late dinner, right ? And I'll just touch on the sleeping part, as in, bouncing down the highway at 65mph in the sleeper. But go ahead try it, it may be your cup of tea.

It's like asking if a $12 meal is worth it compared to a $9 meal. It depends on YOU. We don't know what you want, the money frome solo versus team, and the hundred details about the 2 jobs.

I could never team. Light sleeper here and things like them hitting every pot hole radio and cb blasting would annoy me. Then depending on there exp level driving I sure don't want to take a chance of going off a cliff
