I have always heard that the snow in the west is "powder" and the snow in the east is heavier/wetter. Any truth to this and are they different for driving?

Eastern snow has an accent :biggrin_2556:

    Sorry. couldn't resist that.
Snow varies according to where it gets the moisture, the temps and how it dumps.
You can get some very wet heavy snow on the west side of the Cascades and Sierras.
Likewise, the lake effect snow off the Great Lakes is much heavier and wet.
In the center of the country, it tends to have less moisture content, but not always.
If the moisture comes up from the Gulf and collides with cold air over Kansas, you can have a real treat! (lots of moisture)
So you see, there isn't a general notion you can count on other than the colder the air, usually the less the moisture in the snow.

Sounds about right. Out west, we can have a blizzard without a cloud in the sky.

There's about a 2000-2500 miles difference between the two...

People who have lived here in Michigan all their lives do that too. They just don't shut the roads down because of it.

All snow is the same: Nice to look at in a picture, but a PIA to drive in.

Snow in CO is a pretty white snow. Snow in NYC/Jersey is black, while in TN it's yellow.

But the humidity of the state does play a role wheter it's a wet heavy snow or powder. Down south if it snows, it's always wet.
