Few years ago, I had a broken rib. I knew it was broken, I also knew there wasn't much to be done aside from wrapping and pain control. I wasn't driving. My codriver (at the time) was. Therefore, pain control would not have been a problem. However, when I explained the situation to the lady in the clinic inside Jubitz truck stop, I was sent on my way with, "We don't do that stuff here. You need to go to an urgent care clinic." Okay, where? Is there one in Portland that a tractor-trailer can park at? No.

I ended up going to a hospital for five times the cost. Because we could park the rig in the receiving dock.

There is not a clinic anywhere I know of that a big truck can park at to get a UTI (actually fairly common among truckers) tended to. Bobtail is even dicey. UTI? Yes. Some of my friends will remember not long after I returned to Swift, I had one that nearly hospitalized me. Partly because I neglected it, thinking it was something else and partly because I couldn't get into a clinic anyway.

However. As stated before, Roadside Medical went broke. I have no idea what their business model was. Perhaps a good place to begin your research would be to contact the dental clinic that's doing quite well in the Iowa 80 truck stop in Walcott, IA. Maybe get some ideas from them.

For the record, I think it's a good idea just from my own experience. But good ideas don't necessarily put food on the table.

Another issue is health insurance . I doubt most drivers' insurance would pay for this type of non-emergency out of network care .
Many O/O's have no health insurance . How receptive would clinics be to drivers with no insurance coverage ?

The state of Arkansas made it so you can't see a dentist? I am interested as to how that happened.

DR John McEllligott tried that a few years ago with his PDMD centers. I think there is still the remnants of one @ the Petro in Knoxville. Unfortunately drivers don't and won't support these places, they'd sooner wallow in their self pity and die in their truck. Couple that with the fact that they never have any scratch to pay for things like this, unfortunately it would be a terrible idea!

    What'd they do? Outlaw dentists?

Or did they deem them uneccessary due to the general lack of teeth in Arkansas?:biggrin_25523:

I usually pay cash for these types of services. And get a very nice discount, at most places.

    See below...getting 2 in one whack ;)

Actually, Arkansas passed a ruling that forbid the operation of clinics in locations such as truck stops.

This ruling (passed about 3 years ago) did not effect the small clinics you see for drug test and physicals. But it did effect Dentist and Doctors that operated within or adjacent to a truck stop.

You can thank the Doctors of Arkansas for this. They lobbied hard to get it passed.

I'm not sure the words "Truck Stop" was used in the actual bill. But it did have an effect on those locations. If I remember correct, this was covered by "The Trucker News" at the time.

I know I lost a #### good dentist that was doing a lot of work at the time. She even come in on Sundays to accommodate my schedule.
