I got mine when I was 18. Not being able to go out of state sucks. Having your own truck and working for yourself is pretty nice though. Look to local jobs like the Construction / Excavation drivin a dump truck or something. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
Is there a point to get a CDL at 18?

Theres hardly ANY local driving or just statewide companies that will hire you until your 21 but theres alot of companies who want you to be 23.Good Luck I was in your shoes at one time when I was 19 and I had my class a cdl, I could not find any driving work anywhere no matter how much a company was desperate for drivers!

The 23 years old deal, I belive anyways, is a product of Insurance. I got a letter from my insurance company about 2-3 weeks after my old man added me on, It basically said any DUI (obviousley), wreckless driving, speeding 5mph over, lane change without signal, etc the list goes on and on, that I would be dropped from that company's coverage until I was 23. On the other hand, for a good part of last summer, my old man drove our truck and I filled in and helped out 2 other excavation outfits we work with, and did not get a letter from either of their insurance comanies.?

The safety director came up to me once he realized I was not 21, and after he had already hired me, and said "just don't hit anything unless its a dog"Caterpillar Cowboy Thanks this.
