I use TripAdvisor app on my phone. Shows choices and you can choose price range. Just planned a 16-night trip from Midwest to Pacific Coast and ended up with 8 nights at Super 8 motels based on price and reviews. La Quinta Inns is another one we liked but Super 8 is everywhere. Reviews are your friend.

One thing, Super 8 is popular so they might be full if you don't reserve ahead of time, depending on when you're going.

Ltl carriers give their drivers cards like these that give them major discounts billed on account.

clc lodging card ( Google it)

    The last Super 8 I stopped at and it's been over 10 years was $85 a night. I'll sleep with a ####roach for $40. :)

To the OP I use Google and call the hotel/motels in the area I'm going to stop in. More desolate the spot the cheaper, usually

Also casinos in Nevada are good to stop in.

wyndham, choice hotel apps work good, you can search for truck parking within the apps. Motel 6's are the cheapest major chain and some of them are exactly what you pay for and some of the newer ones are really nice for the price.....
I never stay at mom and pop places unless that's my only choice.
