When my good one fried. I got a cobra 25 ltd classic for about 50 bucks on sale at pilot. I got it about 4 or 5 years ago. Waited until the road king mics were on sale and got one for about 18 or 19 bucks I think. It has been more than enough for what I need. Everyone says it sounds good and they hear me crystal clear. Never been tuned and peaked.

You start buying radios that someone has opened up or never had the SWR checked. Hard telling what you will get. Someone is always selling one on the radio at a truck stop, but you would need a radio to hear them...:biggrin_25523:

Just now looking online and came across Uniden PRO510XL CB Radio for $35 on amazon.com.

Is this throwing money away? Is Cobra one of the better manufacturers?

    *** Edited Post ****

Wow saw the Cobra 25NW Classic radio, nice! but pricy.

I just looked online this is the kind I last bought, but added a road king mic.

This radio runs about 80 bucks and up on different sites. I would look at pilots to see if they are on sale and if not buy a cheap radio and keep an eye open for this one to go on sale. It is more than enough for what you need. cobra 25 ltd classic

Years ago I had a cheap uniden in a 4 wheeler. Was a throw away radio. Most drivers prefer cobras or galaxies.

Thanks so much Notarp. The CB isn't something I gave any thought to. I'd hate to throw away $30 on a throw away radio. Guess I'll do as you say look around and get the best I can afford for the best price.

You are welcome. Problem is if you get one that is cheap and junk and can't get out. As a flat bedder some places you call in to check in to load or unload. Some places you call in before you arrive. A radio is a useful tool. I would not buy the cheapest or the most expensive. Most co trucks will already have antennas. You will need to supply the radio. I myself like cobras. I have had others before. Never had a galaxy tho. Some drivers like them. Too me a decent cobra is priced just right and will get the job done. When you get out there you will hear (maybe) the junk radios trying to communicate. Then you will here the guy from mars checking in...:biggrin_2556: All you need is something that can get out good for 5 miles or so. You will hear a lot of complaints about cbs. Fact is there is a lot of bored fools out there. They are a very useful thing to have if they are on. I was heading to the rock on 40 and was approaching a curve in AR. I heard of a stalled big truck in the lane just out of the curve. I had time to mirror check and get over. Had I not known it would have been ugly to try and get stopped if the hammer was occupied.

I have heard of couches, fridges, cows, all kinds of things in the road. When you are running 70 mph it is kind of nice to know to back it down before you have to make a possible life or death decision. Many a 4 wheeler has been run off the road because a driver made a split second decision to switch lanes and had someone in his blind spot. I use every tool available to me to help do this job.

Not to mention, just the frustration alone of knowing you can miss a bad traffic jam by being aware of what is ahead of you. Many times I have looked over from a service road when I was rolling by a bad wreck while a lot of drivers was just turning on the radios with the big question. "What's going on?" "Why are we not moving?":biggrin_25525:

I picked up a Cobra 29ltd classic when I first got out on the road. It worked pretty decent until I had the money and got around to taking it in to have it tuned, peaked, and put 40w finals in it. Got the RK56 mic too since the one it comes with isn't very good. It's still going.
