Hey there, everyone, how's the open road?
Been driving for about a year, been to three carriers, and now I'm team driving with a family co-driver who has 10 weeks experience.
And right now, we're not enjoying ourselves.
And for every post about "Company A" in the Good Trucking Company section, there are two or three in the Bad Company section. What gives?
We are the backbone of this industry as well as the retail industry. I know a lot of us should stop whining, but we should be treated better.
Not a week has gone by where I have wanted to scream at my dispatcher (that is if I was ever able to reach him on the phone), and I want to tell the environmentalists to kiss my ### because they pushed the whole DEF thing before the majority of truckstops had it ready on pump. Now I have to get these chemicals on my hands and clothes because of the environment.
Is There Any Happiness Out There?

There is plenty of happiness around. But some folks are just not equipped to ever be happy. Then you have some folks who are ALWAYS happy. I personally think that both of these types suffer from some form of mental illness or another.
But I do believe that Mr. Average Joe has to find his own happiness. It is not going to come from someone or something outside of you.
I don't care what you are talking about, be it a job, or your personal life. There are going to be things that upset you and piss you off. And hopefully, there will be things that make you happy.
So which do YOU want to focus on? It really is up to you. -
"And right now, we're not enjoying ourselves". Well, I suppose you are finding out what trucking is all about. Something you didn't expect or consider a year ago, right ? Just thought one day, "Hey, I think I'll get into trucking, see the country, make $$$ etc". Hey, nobody told me it would be like this. Well, it's not for everyone, so you have two choices. Stick it out or quit and head home. Consider it a learning experience. But, I suspect you'll be back in a year because once you get the "fever", you can't shake it. Luck to ya'.......
shriner75, Jarhed1964, CondoCruiser and 1 other person Thank this. -
So you been with three carriers in a year? Sounds like you haven't stayed anywhere long enough to see if you might be happy.
Linte_Loco Thanks this. -
Like Big Don said, happiness comes from within. And like Allow Me said, lack of research and realistic expectations lead to unhappiness.
One thing for certain is you better land somewhere and spend a year or more. If you don't you soon won't have to worry about being happy in a truck because even the horrible companies won't hire you. In all honesty I doubt you can get a good company to hire you with your job-hopping record. -
I`m happy

Everything you've said, I've read right here on the forums numerous times. Unlike you (No offense), I understand I will face these problems. But most of them are common sense situations that really.. mean nothing. You may get mad about something your dispatcher has did, or a load you may have gotten but it's apart of the job/lifestyle.
"And right now, we're not enjoying ourselves."
Maybe trucking isn't for you.
Take my learning however you want, but I have plenty of experience dealing with ####askie every day I work. It's how you MANAGE it that projects the outcome. Yes, my manager might piss me off.. But in 10 minutes I will of forgotten I was pissed and just go back to work. In one ear and out the other. (In most situations).
Honestly, most people enjoy it because they get to do something they love. Do you honestly love driving endless hours? Working hard? Thinking of it as work and only that will not get you anywhere. Work for me, means doing something that I may love one day and hate the next, it's never ending but it always is rewarding at the end of the day. I work because I love to. Not because of money. My mindset is different about work then most people. A job isn't a job unless I put 150% effort into it. -
Happy? No. Comfortable with what I do, and who I do it for? Yes.
Happiness is a relative term. Some people are the happiest when they're complaining, or stressed out. Some folks seem NEVER to be happy. Hand 'em a stack of $100 dollar bills, and they'd find a reason to argue. Stacked wrong, facing the wrong way, etc.
3 carriers in a year? Maybe trucking ain't your bag. It's not for everyone, not a crime to find something else to do. -
Like I tell people all the time, truckers could make $1,000,000/year driving and they'd still complain. The best thing to do is not sit around listening to everyone else complain about it otherwise you'll just get worked up about it.
Personally, I love my job. Are there bad days? Sure. I never had a good day at any other job though. -
Still people, some companies, not all,but some, one is a 1st class turd before you even walk in the door,3rd class citizen,or even less. Most trucking companies I think, like the government, play the averages..if they can get by with crappy dispatching,-where one has to sit for 2-3 days,-cheat drivers out of pay,-but most wont say anything,-have shoddy equipment,-but MOST will pull it,they do NOT care if only a FEW will speak up about it,as long as most of their drivers,will,well...keep on truckin. They don't think, like the government, that we KNOW......WITHOUT US,they are nothing... Until there is some movement, some organized "wake up" call for them, things will stay the same,if not get worse,as when money is involved, look out...our Native Americans know something about this....Now, even with the BEST of companies, there will bee bad days, even weeks, but if one is unfortunate enough to be with one of these "sweatshops on wheels" and "taking it" over and over with a smile, well,I wouldn't bet a bucket of ps on your ever being happy...You KNOW what to do,-just do it..
