I just got laid off in another field--is it worth it to pay 4k plus to get a license now? Seems like it could be a problem finding a job.

On the national level with OTR carriers it isn't worth it . Check and see if you can find a local company that would be willing to hire you . The companies hiring now are just replacing drivers that quit because of inadequate pay . No drivers are voluntarily giving up decent jobs .
