Check Cardinal Logistics. Depending on the customer, they have local, regional, long haul.
JBS Carriers has a Texas regional division; don't know how good the weekly paychecks are though.Last edited: Sep 3, 2014

I dont know how it is where you are but I am doing well running what I would say regional flatbed here in the northeast. I am not a big mileage junky and I would say im close to 50 percent deadhead miles and manage to keep a decent hub mile $$ average. I could probably be home everyday with a dryvan here and the rates are paying very well for them to. I have 2 kids myself and plan on seeing them grow up. Only happens once.

Run smarter not harder... been my goal since I brought my truck & it works pretty well for me. I run in between 1800-2300 miles a week & do well. I don't have an $2K truck payment but I like what my net is week in & week out

I've been driving 15 years regional and home weekends. The money is just as good as staying out months at a time. Houston should have a lot of smaller carriers that operate regionally and get drivers home weekly. Really if you live in east TX or anywhere east of the MS there is no reason you can't be home weekly. Staying out months on end is the pits.

I have ran regional 18 years made good money. I pulled livestock switched to a hopper recently. Doing really well right now. Of course keep in mind every type and every lane has it's slow time or just about every one does.

I run local. Make better money and turn way fewer miles.
Problem is a lot of guys simply look at gross revenue rather than what is left over at the end of the day. OTR guys can turn some pretty impressive numbers for monthly revenue running hard. Thing is, if you're running 13,000 or more miles in a month, you're looking at spending $15,000 or better in operating costs. Factor in that 10% or better if the operation is taking if you're a lease operator, and all of a sudden, things start dwindling. If you've got your own gig, you're also looking at trailer payments and maintenance, which so you gained back the percentage the company was going to take and put it into your trailer.
When I switched to local my gross revenue dropped a bit.
And my operating expenses dropped significantly. I've used less than 100-gallons of fuel some weeks. -
You didn't mention the type of freight you want to haul. At one time, you could make a decent living running the triangle from Houston to Dallas to San Antonio. I have known drivers who ran that area who were able to get home frequently and still earn a good living. I would check with some of the carriers who base out of Texas. There is also a need for drivers in the oil fields. San Antonio, Ft. Worth and around Midland are still hot spots for oil field work. The hours can be long, but you will be somewhat close to home. Check with some of those who frequent the truck stops around Houston. I ran into some local drivers in that area south of Houston in a couple of the independent fuel stops on the south side. Some of them are home every night. I don't recall some of the names, but you could visit the fuel stops and wait to talk to them as they stop for fuel.

My profit is better running regional than OTR. About 700 miles out is as far as I go. Work smarter, not harder. Run high paying miles instead of lots of miles. I'll take a long load if it makes sense. Like I said, 'PROFIT' is king, not gross. I can have my truck serviced at my local shop with mechanics that give a ####. I have less wear and tear on my truck, I am home 3 times a week, less stress . . priceless.
