I was looking at the FMCSA handbook and they say there are 250,000 regulated carriers with 1 power unit who have had activity under their authority within the last 3 years. Is there really that many guys finding and driving their own loads and working only for themselves?
Or does it not mean that they have their own business and finding their own loads just because they have authority and 1 truck?
IS there really 250,000 Owner Operators running under own authority?

What handbook?Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Yes, there are at least that many. Likely way more than that.

I bet it's way more then that.
Maybe that many in the long haul but think about the locals.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Also, kinda wonder how FMCSA counts O/O's. Is one Landstar guy counted in the 250k or is he counted as a large company?PE_T and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
149,999 of them have Lowe's mailbox lettering and dont speak a lick of English.

Let’s not forget %90 of trucking companies are made up of small businesses. NOT megas....!!!
xiipercent, kenn2632 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Don't forget that there are a lot of different types of trucking, like dump trucks, moving trucks, car haulers...
I think Hot Shots and box trucks some of them have their own authority also, and there probably are a bunch of others I'm not thinking of.kenn2632, SteerTire and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I've ran in to a few that pull their own tankers. Food waste. And some pull company tankers. Some of the asphalt companies have o/o's leased to them pulling oil for their asphalt plants.
I've seen a couple of unknown names pulling double pneumatics for someone. Driving the opposite way so no chance to talk to them.
If I could guess a percentage. I'd say probably 25% of the local trucks in my state are o/o with the majority of them hauling dirt. Most of them are single 4 axle trucks. They have no pups to pull.Rideandrepair and ZVar Thank this. -
I'll ask again
What handbook?Rideandrepair Thanks this.
