Yup, that’s where I’m getting to as well. But for clarification, those Landstsr drivers would not have their own authority, so in the context of what we’re tlaking about, they wouldn’t be included in those 1 power unit for hire carriers that FMCSA puts out.

By the way, really appreciate your replies on this topic - this is a great community.

ATA states about 3.5 million drivers.
Bureau of Labor Statistics claims Heavy and Tractor-trailer Truck Drivers : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
1,421,400 Delivery Truck Drivers and Driver/Sales Workers
1,871,700 Heavy and Tractor-trailer Truck Drivers
That gives 3,293,100 in 2016 (no numbers for 2017, or 2018)

    Precisely.

I know a lot of lease operators who are content running under a larger carrier's authority, for a myriad of reasons. Not the least is they feel they have a measure of independence, opportunity to earn a better living, etc. Which many do!

Conversely, many of those same lease operators (I know) would not be able to qualify for a decent rate on insurance, equipment, etc. Not to mention, many of them are not well organized or that sharp and disciplined to keep up with the myriad of bookkeeping requirements there are, even as a 1 man operator.

Thus, having someone else do the lion's share of that aspect of the business is a real benefit. Tack on the aspect of them not having to worry about booking their own loads, dealing with appointments, collecting money, etc.

For me, I like having my own authority, truck & trailer. I'm not beholden to or relying on someone else (for the most part) to provide for me. That's just me though ;-)

You were an O/O before. Now you are a carrier. No change required other than people use the correct terms

If we added in all of the trucks that don't cross state lines and don't have MC numbers the number might be a whole lot bigger yet.

I don't think a lot of states require local carriers to have authority, not sure as I'm one of those 1 man band and do interstate business.
