As long as there is slack in the chain like in your picture they’re considered two separate tie downs so you get 6600# per chain/binder. A machine weighing 16,000 needs at least 4 tie downs.
Is this ok? (chaining)

I had to go thru a bunch of pictures before I could find a good simple illustration of what we were talking about.blairandgretchen, jamespmack and TripleSix Thank this. -

Do you have the clips that keep your snap binders closed or use a different system?Pamela1990, jamespmack, PoleCrusher and 1 other person Thank this. -
You own legal begal trucking, remember?
I’m not gonna sit here and pretend it’s up to DOT snuff. It’s not. I’ve never had a binder pop. Now, yes, normally the excess chain wraps around the binder plus a bungee pulling it tight... I couldn’t do that hear and simply used the bungee.
If I get slapped with a OOS some day. So be it.
I know they make “clips” and zip ties that are apparently DOT compliant. To me there is zero difference between a DOT rated zip tie and a bungee besides writing and money.
Works for me and I’m too stubborn to change.Pamela1990, jamespmack, PoleCrusher and 1 other person Thank this. -
@Bean Jr. & @jamespmack could one of you guys post some pics of 1 chain/2 binders on a coil, or at least explain it in Crayon so I can understand. I jjst can't wrap my head around this.
jamespmack and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
Them clips are cheap. Maybe $5. I’m not gonna say bungees aren’t safe- but once I seen how slick them clips are, it’s too easy to use them. Saves aggravation if nothing else, n with snaps, I rather have less aggravation being that I’m already taking the easy route loltony97905, PoleCrusher and johndeere4020 Thank this. -
I’ll be frank.
90% of the time if I chained at Melton it was under a tarp. Out of sight. Out of mind. As they say.
I’ve chained three or four times here at SPD... it’s gonna be machinery/something on wheels or a crate. I’ll be moving to ratchets eventually.
I’ve never had a binder pop with or without a bungee around it... clips wouldn’t help me sleep at night regardless of what the DOT think.
Do you have a link to the clips though? I’m curious... are they rated for weight so difference sizes per binders?johndeere4020 Thanks this. -
No link, idk what the name of them is. I’ll take a pic next time I’m at the truck. Idk if they’re rated for weight/thickness of chain.
I heard there’s a law about them in CT; I can’t speak to the validity of that, but as I said they’re less aggravation than getting out more bungees or running them.PoleCrusher, stwik and johndeere4020 Thank this.
