You will always hear negative comments thruout your career, thats how those drivers see trk driving. They're just being honest.Anybody ask me how I see trk driving im going to tell them and not sugar coat anything.Like someone said, its all what you make of it.Trk driving could very well be for you.You have to give it a good solid yr to find out.

There are things about trucking that no one will tell you about. I'm glad to be able to shed a little light on this career choice.

You MUST be able to solve problems on your own as far as managing your day.

You MUST know when it is safe to drive and when it is not.

After you get your cdl and start training. Your mentor will focus HEAVILY on these aspects because THATS what keep you rollin' and making money.

If you start training and you have problems with shifting, turning, backing etc. It will more than likely be up to you to address these issues and GET BETTER. Trucking takes some talent and nobody can teach you everything you need to know to be great. They'll just show you how to be safe while you improve ON YOUR OWN!

When you become solo otr. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE A MINIMUM OF 8 HOURS A DAY TO BE COMPETITIVE IN OTR TRUCKING. Plus most starter companies want you to NOT take a 34 HOUR reset and run 8.25 hours a day until you take home time or if they need you too.

The people that dont make money in trucking and aren't satisfied with hometime simply do not do their homework.

You must understand. Some people live in their trucks for months and are always available. YOU WILL BE BEHIND THOSE DRIVERS IF YOU DEMAND HOMETIME FREQUENTLY on otr and THEY WILL MAKE MORE $$$

If you keep your expenses low. You can reach your financial goals very fast. BUT If you have a mortgage you will not be pleased with paying money for a place that you can't enjoy unless you are also providing for your family.

If you're single with no mortgage. No children or kids are grown. There is no better career to jump into really fast and meet your goals financially. You wouldn't believe some of the testimonies I've heard from other truckers. From prison to 6 figures. Homeless to a quarter million a year through business ventures that were made possible by trucking wages. One job that I had the founder use to live in a trailer park. He got the guts to drive long hauls and used the money to start a moving company that grosses over 1million a year. You can do this but you have to persevere EVERYDAY and have a GREATER purpose for driving a truck.

trucking isn't a massage parlor, although many recruiters will stroke you into submission..

if you want to be happy, go to a massage parlor and ask for a happy ending.

Well I am female, I don't think that'll work, lol.

If not happy, at least satisfied in this profession.

I will tell you a few things, some may disagree. That is OK. I am getting ready to go back OTR after over 11 years. Yes, generally speaking it sucks. A lot of it depends on you. You have to have incredible perseverance. You have to be able to deal with shifting sleep schedules. You better enjoy solitude. More than likely you will need to go OTR with a megacarrier for your first year. Then, if you achieve a good record for that year you can move up to the next tier in trucking jobs. The first year will probably suck real bad. If you move up to a better carrier, it WILL get better! I did my first year with Schneider and got screwed a lot. It was a 6 on 2 day off dedicated Wal Mart job. I was not given the miles the company said I would get, go I stayed out weeks at a time to meet the financial goals I needed to meet. There was way to much uncompensated time. I was lied to a lot. I persevered and got my first year in. Then I went to Maverick, and that is where I learned to really love trucking. No one at Maverick ever lied to me. I got the miles and it got better. Yes, it sucked at first but got better. It was harder on me than on some because I came from a white collar backround. Those are just a few rambling thoughts from me. Good luck to you!

  9. Simply put.

You will either like it or hate it.

The statements of how much the job sucks made in a large percentage by the malcontents who didn't want to do this in the first place. Their words need to for the most part be taken with a grain of salt.

I've been driving for 14 years, LTL for the last 10, and aside from the occasional bad day which we all have I'm quite happy.

There is one HUGE prerequisite to succeed in this job. You must be one that takes well to solitude and enjoys it. I do and always have.

So, coming from one who's enjoyed wandering around ever since he was a kid with a well used home built bicycle, it is in fact possible to be happy in this profession. :)
