Slight twist because I am a woman. I'm a petite little thing, but I can drive anything. I'm not at all afraid of the trucks. I am slightly concerned about my safety. I do carry..But I am mostly concerned about whether the lifestyle that trucking creates is right for me. A little background...

I am recently divorced, NO KIDS, just my dog (110lb). I just went through the worst heartache of my life, and I think I need to just get the heck away from everything familiar to me and be GONE. And get paid at the same time?? Sure!

I have zero desire to have a personal life any time soon. And just getting in my truck (pickup truck) and driving til I run out of gas is the best therapy for me. I'm sure many of you feel the same way. I don't mind being gone for weeks at a time. I have nowhere else to be.

Driving a truck has always been in the back of my head, but when I was married, I didn't want to do it and be gone so much.

The next twist. Since the aforementioned heartache, I've gotten to be very close friends with a female cousin. She wants to do this, too. She's the one that brought it up, and she wants to go as a team. Last night, we had an hour or so conversation about the pros and cons, and how we would have to take measures not to get on each other's nerves and ruin our friendship. I know that working with a friend is difficult. I know that living with a friend is difficult. Combine those two and...well it scares the hell out of me. But she and I both have the same work ethic, we agreed that we would go into it with the same goals, same ethics, same mentality...no aggressive driving, no unnecessary risks like driving when you're too tired to just because it's your shift, etc. I don't worry about hygiene or cleanliness. I don't worry about her ability, either, as she has driven a log truck before, but does not have a cdl..it was a relative or friend's truck or something.

And then the dog. I know lots of people drive with a dog or two, but how about a huge one that has exercise needs?? And then sharing space with not just you but another human??

Please, any and all advice is welcome.

Also, pros and cons of buying my own truck. I have money set aside that was going to be a down payment on a house, but I don't need a house if I do this. I can stay where I am living now when I come home. For now. I could put a really good down payment on a nice, newer, comfortable truck. (also, where is the best place to browse trucks for sale??)

well if it were me i dont think i would buy a truck until you drove a lil while and reevaluated everything from your experience driving
i was a commercial fisherman for 38 years but i was a crewmember before i was a captain before i was an owner. If a year down the line you like trucking then buy a truck you might even know what your doing by then :) The cousin the dog etc dont natter until that other stuff is settled

Sounds like the right job for you or at least a great adventure and it sounds like that's what you need right now.

safety will only be a big concern in the beginning, you will figure out it out fast.

Teaming with a friend can be tough, imagine you and your best friend locked in a jail cell 23 hours a day. Best intentions turn into big fights over something as small as a pen.

110 lb dog and teaming is a total no go. If you want to take your dog, and I would, your going solo. There is no space for a dog that big teaming and it's not fair to the dog to be locked up like that with no time to exercise.

Don't even think about buying your own truck without 5 years of experience.

Don't even worry about buying a truck or looking at them. That's so far down the road it doesn't matter.

Focus on if this is really what you want to do.

Big dog and teaming doesn't work. what I would do is leave the dog for one year go team then go solo with the dog, and I love my dog.

You're making a BIG assumption, that you will adhere to the lifestyle easily. Maybe yes, maybe no. In your situation, both you and your cousin have to get thru truck school, pass all tests, get hired and then really like the lifestyle, this week, next week, 6 months from now and 5 years from now, right ? Do not get ahead of yourselves, one step at a time. I'd say less than 50% of newbies are around the biz 6 months in.

I say if it is something you want to try, do your research and go for it what do you have to lose ? Like the saying goes you will never regret the things you have done but only the things you didn't try in life.

You have some money saved up which is a good thing starting out, you might love it then again you might hate it either way you won't know unless you try. Even if you decide you don't want to drive the investment to optain a CDL is really not that much when you consider schooling for other trades, plus a current CDL is not a bad thing to have on someones resume.
