Since I'm kind of "post happy" today, thought I'd run this by you guys....
What should a guy expect to pay to have an overhead done on a Cummins ISX 450? How long should I expect to be out of service?
Thanks!

I think it's about 4-6 hours labor. Cummins quoted me $400 i think. I took it to my local shop which is also a Cummins authorized shop and they did it for a little cheaper. It didn't make any difference in my trucks performance. If you don't have over 500K on your engine I wouldn't bother.
Peteyellow and Gears Thank this. -
should take about 2 to 3 hours for a good tech to set them, but it really depends on the wrokshop. Have them done if you dont know when they were last done, because if they are getting to far out of adjustment you could be up for a big repair bill. if you are mechanicly minded buy a workshop manual and do them yourself. Even taking your time it should not take any longer than about 4 hours.

ISX's are actually one the easiest engines to do a tune up on. Most trucks I can do in about 2 hours. There are some exceptions. Some trucks, like Kenworths, put the air cleaner housing right over the center of the rocker cover so there is more labor involved to get the engine. I really depends how much stuff is in the way. Sometimes it is 6 hours!

i say do them every 12 months..
may not really need adjusting but if there are any problems growing, early detection is the cheapest -
I just paid $300 for one. Took 3 hours. I think I may try to do the next one myself.

What truck it is in will be a big factor in labor costs.
Big hood = cheaper bill
Short nose Crapcadia = bigger bill!Tug Toy Thanks this. -
I work on these trucks everyday and I`d say the average bill would be around 4 hundred and i`d suggest doing every 300k to prevent any issues. It does take some special tools . A clearance adjustment tool from cummins and a torque wrench that does in/lbs . I`d suggest making the appointment and dropping it off the night before so that your engine is cold when its done
