ISX Cummins running crappy...I think ?

I've been having the same problem for awhile now. Bought the truck a year ago and noticed it had a "turbo cough". It would let out a cough and puke out smoke. International dealer thought it might be an "air control valve" sticking. Took it to Cummins dealer and they "diagnosed" it to indeed be a sticky air control valve. They siad it wouldn't hurt it to run it that way. I put off replacing it and the problem actually seemed to resolve itself. Several months later the EGR valve decided to suddenly go out. Sudden loss of power and LOTS of black smoke. Replaced that at an International dealer ($1200.+). Ran okay for a few months, then the cough returned and engine warning light started coming on. Called Cummins and ordered the "air control valve". Installed it myself ($300.). That didn't solve anything (thank you cummins central power). Called Cummins. They said the only other thing it could be is the turbo. Replaced the turbo on 3/13 ($3200.+). Drove it 500+ miles yesterday and the problem is as bad as it ever was! Called 1-800-diesels numerous times for help. Got some suggestions, etc. from them. Contacted a cummins dealer in Hodgkins Illinois (Chicago area). They said it could be that the EGR pressure differential tubes are plugged or carboned up! I am having those replaced today..........wish me luck. By the way.... the people at Cummins Central Power in Rock Island Illinois are idiots! I think Cummins just wants to sell high priced parts by the gross. I am starting to learn that nearly every ISX Cummins will have an EGR problem sooner or later. The Techs should be well aware of this but they seem to want to keep it a secret or they're just to lazy and stupid to learn about their own products. If you're having a problem with your ISX, KEEP calling different dealers etc. You might get lucky and find one that might be able to help, rather than just wanting to sell high priced parts!

Every time I begin to think that Cummins has learned how to resolve the problem of the ISX/EGR Dilemma I read a thread like this. I think it is way past time that a class action be brought against Cummins and the EPA. This is a disaster of epic proportions that is hurting everyone whether directly involved or indirectly involved in the trucking industry.

Just went from a 2003 379 Pete with a 550 Kitty, 18 spd and 3:36 gears. It would pull like crazy through every gear up to 2000-2100 rpm (if you wanted to).
Now I'm in 2006 379 Pete with a 500 ISX Cummins 13 spd and 3:55 gears with 64,000 miles on it. In any gear it feels like it falls on it's face at about 1600 rpm. If I keep my foot on the floor it will slowly work up to about 1800 but it quits pulling at 1600, the boost falls off and everything. For some reason 4th gear is totally worthless, I'm lucky to see 20 psi for boost. Usually it will run at about 31 when it's pulling a hill. 5th gear starts bucking at about 1500 rpm before it stops pulling. 6th and 7th are so so, and 8th through 13th are usually about normal. ( I don't really know what normal is on this engine though) The thing that really gets me is every now and then it will let loose and pull like a freight Train through one or two gears clear to 2100 rpm, then it falls on its face again.
Peterbilt has looked at it and couldn't find anything. Cummins put it on there dyno and can't find anything. It usually sits for about a day before they can check it out and then it won't act up. I think it's gotta be good and hot before it acts up.

I have the same exact issue going on with my 2016 t880 isx 15 500 hp did you ever figure it out ? We replaced turbo/injectors/ ecm/injector harness still does it

I have an International that is dying out on hills with light loads it should be pulling right through without a problem. I had a baby kitty that pulled better. Some people blame the whole egr thing. People have found a way to eliminate the egr either by taking it out on the ecm or blocking off the gases from going into the intake manifold or changing the exhaust manifold end that feeds into the egr cooler eliminating that so that the gases don't go anywhere into the intake. People are getting results like half a mile a gallon wit more power. Pdi makes an intake manifold and does ecm tuning to turn off the egr. I'm gonna try the intake first put a K&N air filter for big trucks in for better flo a high flo stack muffler looks stock but isn't then I'll probably do the ecm. Not sure what my mileage is looking like but not really happy with how it pulls on the hills.

I have the same issue going on just wondering if you got it figured out we replaced turbo /injectors/injector harness/ ecm /delta p sensor /I map sensor still does it

I had that problem with mine. Exhaust pressure sensor went to hell. They tried telling me it was am air to air leak. Nope #### thing would get hot and derate on me.
