I recently bought a 2006 pete with a 500 hp ISX cummins. I have a driver on it. It's been averaging 4.11 mpg. I'll admit he may idle it more than I would, but we make a lot of runs together and I know he doesn't then. Also, when we're running together I make sure we only run about 67 mph. I'm wondering if it's the egr valve, but I'm not sure. I've owned cats for years and years so this cummins is unfamiliar territory to me.

Your truck being an 06 is a Cummins C/M 870 it has a different EGR system than the 871..

Yep, CM870. Some the sensors are the same, not all in the same spot. Check/clean or replace as needed. Once you get over 65 mph the mileage really starts to drop off. Try to run 64-65 and see if you get any significant improvements. After that you need to start checking for boost leaks anywhere between the turbo and intake, including leaking past the EGR valve. Run with the EGR valve unplugged for a bit and see if it improves. Top end tune-up might be needed.
