if you want a Pete with a Detroit just buy a 389 glider with the 12.7 and be done with all the EPA crap. Unless you have to run CA then a glider it out of the question.

KW, Freightliners, and western star also offer gliders. Not just 12.7 detroit, also cat engines like c-15 6nz.

They all break! It's just a question of how often and how much $$$. I think the next truck will be a S60, 15 spd, in a glider.
The real question is, how good is your shop? A bad shop will break you faster than cheap freight.

Fitzgerald sells good gliders. They have 10sp, 13 sp, and 18sp. They sell freightliners (coronado/columbia), Kenworth (T660/W900L) and Petes (386/389). They can get the truck ready with engine, tranny, and axles. Petes cost min $135K. Freightliners $121K with 2015s.

Harrison makes gliders. Most there dealers at Iowa. Ask cowpie. He got his blue columbia from them. Their columbias are for $113k. Coronados are $116-$120K. They start doing cascadias. some guys in this site saw two of them with n-14 cummins.

I've ran both the DD and ISX and X15 from 2011 to present. In my experiences Detroit is the better engine, but Cummins seems to have a better emission/regen system.
Had lots of parts failures on the engine itself with Cummins but only engine parts I ever replaced on a DD is the fan belt tensioner/idle pulley assembly.

Had all kinds of emissions failures with the DD but only NOX sensors with Cummins.

Me, I just like the feel and sound of the Detroit way better too. They pull more similar to a Cat. And Cummins sound like a gas engine with a bad case of spark knock, LOL

After my experience with Western Star, DD15, and the service dept at the local Western Star dealer - I would never own another one of either of them. Too long of a story to put it all in here, but their parts are crap straight from the factory, their remans are crap, their service dept will not accept responsibility for their errors - the finally did after a year of fighting with them. Never again. Post 2007 ISX's don't seem to be good for much either, but I'd buy Cummins before a DD any day.
