I have a 2003 W-900 with a pre-emission 550 ISX, it has a waste gate turbo, I keep getting a check engine light for turbo speed(there is no turbo speed sensor never was). The turbo was new in September installed be Cummins and been having issue ever since. I didn't have any problems before new turbo was installed.
When check engine light come on it derates the engine, always happens in a hard pull going up hill, coming down hill light goes out and were back in business. Have replaced engine pressure sensor on the intake and installed new ambient pressure sensor.Have had it back to Cummins and Kenworth ,they scratch there heads say i don't know and hand me a bill for there time, anyone have any clue as to what is going on,or how to fix the problem?

What is the exact fault number?
-
I read it through electronic log book....don't have code number.....its been hooked to computer several times and nobody has an answer as to why this is happening. ....its says ...engine 1 turbo speed
-
One of the shops that hooked to it should have a record and be able to give you the fault. There's 4 different fault codes listed for turbo 1 speed. The SPN should be 103, but there's several different FMI's. The engine CM # and the current software version would be helpful too. Is it an EGR or non EGR engine?

Ok, you are right, there is no speed sensor, but the ECM can calculate estimated speed based on other sensors. It is calculating the turbo speed is too high based on air fuel ratio and inputs from the intake manifold pressure sensor and ambient sensors. I see both of those have been replaced. I suspect either the wrong turbo has been installed, and/or the ECM calibration needs to be updated. Getting these checked should be your next course of action. Double check the turbo part number is correct for your engine CPL number. Very easy to install the wrong turbo.
BigHossVolvo Thanks this. -
The ECM has been updated, and turbo part numbers matched...I'm suspecting it's a defective turbo...

Seems to me it's was a 500 number,I'd look at paperwork but truck is 150 miles from where I'm sitting right now....home for Christmas
