This Topic is a question in the sense that I would like some feedback but I pretty much have decided that OTR is not for me. What made me decide to pursue a career in driving? I was telling a friend of mine I was getting burnt out with my cleaning business and wanted a change. She works for the labor department in NJ and said I could get my CDL for free and there is good money to be made. I figured ok its free to try so how could I lose. A little about my background. I graduated from Rutgers University with a BA. I worked for the labor union in Philadelphia for a year doing demolition. I worked with autistic children for 2 years. I worked as a personal trainer off and on full and part time from 1988 until now. from 2001 -2008 I worked as construction manager for a small construction company and also started a cleaning company. The construction company shut down but I continued to run my cleaning business. in 2009 I started a taxi business and owned to taxis until I shut the business down in 2010. Fast forward to 2013 I went to orientation with Knight. only 4 of us where in Orientation and it was very unorganized. I got frustrated because the company was having issues verifying my self employment. My attitude and frustration showed and I was sent home. 2 weeks later I went to US Xpress. This time I knew I needed to have patience when it came to the hiring process and so I dealt with all the BS with a positive attitude and was hired. I live in NJ and was told I had to meet my trainer in Texas. I paid for my flight and was off to get trained 5 days later. When I arrived in Texas my trainer told me he was running late and I would be waiting an extra day. The frustration set it but I kept my cool. The next day I went to meet him at the terminal only to hear he was stuck being unloaded and would not arrive until the evening. Finally he showed up, gave me the keys to the truck and said "make yourself comfortable I will be back in a few hours". Oh well no hours that day. Next morning he told me the truck had to go in the shop and it would be at least another day before we hit the road. Another full day at the terminal was not going to happen so I asked around until I found someone willing to train me. The first mistake was deciding to allow a female lease operator to train me. I was so eager to get my training hours that I didn't think about having to be in the truck with this overweight female for 3 weeks. Ok I finally get into the drivers seat so we could bobtail to the trailer a few hours away. I hadn't eaten all day and she agreed to stop so I could pick up some food. I thought I would have a few minutes to eat before driving but she told me I had to eat while I was driving. I told he I have never driven before, how am I supposed to eat and drive? she told me I will show you how. I didn't want to do it but I also didn't want to start off day 1 with problems. It was a short day and though I wanted to shower we weren't at a stop that we could get a free shower so I went without it.. the next day was a long one and she didn't want to stop to eat so I ate some junk food I had in the truck to hold me over. When we finally stopped I was able to shower and eat so no major problems. The next day she still didn't want to stop to get lunch but at this point my stomach couldn't handle anymore crap food. We were getting to all of our stops at least 6 hours ahead of schedule so didn't see why we couldn't stop for at least 30 min to eat. She explained as a lease operator she has to keep rolling to make enough money to pay for the truck. I told her that this is a new lifestyle for me and that it was going to take me a few days to get used to running this hard without food. third day we pull into the truck stop at 10pm and had been driving since 7am. she said after we eat we were going to do paper logs for the past 3 days. I asked in a funny but serious way when do I get to sleep. she said that she felt this line of work wasn't for me because of my eating habits. I explained it takes a few days to adapt but she told me she didn't have a few days she had to keep running hard. she said she felt I would be better off training with a company driver so she called her coordinator. I was dropped of at the next terminal. I was told that they would find me a new trainer but couldn't guarantee it would be a company driver. I explained that I don't care who the trainer is i just want to get my hours in and that it was my trainers decision that I needed a company driver trainer. I was told it would be another day or 2 before they find me another trainer and they would put me in a hotel until then. I had not slept or eaten much I the past few days so I decided to take shuttle to the airport and went home. There are more details to this story so if any new drivers have questions I will definitely fill in the details. The good news is when I came home a ran into an old fiend that owns a local small trucking company and he said he will help me get started without dealing with OTR.
It didn't work out for me the first time. Will it workout if I try again?

Paragraphs are your friend.. I can't read this without straining my eyes..

Sorry about that. I started writing and had to run out for a bit so I got lazy. I will edit it later. I am sure there are a lot of typos as well.
-
do you clean that way too?
Because if you are that lazy and actually have a BA, then you had best re-evaluate how you do things. I mean come on. How hard is it to tap the enter key with your little pinky....
Because that laziness will get people killed out here on the road.Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this. -
yea was a tough read without breaks
quick break down

old friend that owns small trucking firm was willing to put him to work as local driver. -
So you tried OTR. It didn't work out but you have found a job with a small company that won't be OTR?
It sounds like your biggest issue was being pushed too hard too soon. If the small local company doesn't do that to you things may look a lot different.
Small local company could mean a lot of things. Regional, OTR, local P&D.
I don't think anyone could answer whether it will work out or not without a lot more information. -
Welcome to trucking!, big money! LOL LOL LOL

Nah its not bad and I second that paragraphs do help. Your paper logs should have been done daily. Lease op. O/o or not.- in my opinion. A little time should be allowed to adjust. Breaks for what have you you ought to be alright. Patients is a virtue..

Suggestions... are this ask your trainer politely to stop in a Wal Mart and pick up some apples/oranges and bananas... a couple of cans of tuna/chicken small cooler and a loaf of bread... Your stomach will thank you and you won't blow up like that fat guy in jogging pants you see at every shipper/receiver.. -
ok now to op ? this isnt typical of all otr trucking the l/o lady driver most likely has money issues since she was trying to run herself so ragged she wont last long. the first trainer may have been a better bet but you have waiting issues which could be an issue doing otr as there will be days you will have to wait ie for loads or break downs etc.
patience is a must need for doing otr truckingWorldofTransportation Thanks this.
