well, sunday night i walk back to my truck from the drivers lounge to find that my truck had been hit on the drivers side. ripped mirrors off and bent top half of door back.
turns out the driver who hit me was actually still parked next to me and owned up to everything. that took me by surprise.
after getting new mirrors on, i head off to get a door. got a few miles down the road and get a yellow check engine light, so now off i go to the closest dealer to get it checked out. i got the fault code to flash on the dash, which was 121 - Engine Position Sensor Circuit (EPS
mechanic comes out to drive truck into service bay and it wont start! a new eps is installed, truck wont idle, but mechanic manages to get truck to run enough to get it in bay. so fast forward several hours later of waiting in their drivers lounge, i inquire about the trucks status. i was told truck needs an ecm because the only thing happening is all of the injectors are just clicking. (the ecm and injector wiring harness was replaced back in july. the eps sensor and all other sensors, save the ambient air sensor, have been replaced within the last two years). I get a replacement ecm sent to me covered under my warranty.
after this long winded post i get to my question...
how did i go from a 121 faulty code to an ecm that is no good? basically the answer i got from freightliner was they didnt know.
on another note, i would like to pass along the info of the company i bought the ecm from as i was given excellent customer service by terry. (i hope i am not breaking forum rules by posting this companies info as i have no connection to them in any way other than buying an ecm from them.)

I feel for you. At least the guy who hit your truck man'ed up and did the right thing. Guys like that are becoming rare. ECMs fail once in a blue moon. They're pretty tough. That is a weird one. At least it was under warranty! Imagine if your warranty was done, and it was a hit and run! Could be worse!

Those doors are tricky to adjust perfect. I put a new hinge on mine and got it sealed tight and opens and closes real easy like new but I am so used to slamming it shut.

update:
got truck back and now i am not sure what is going on...
turned key on, hit starter button and the check engine light turns on, but faintly. truck fires up and idles fine, yet kinda rough. no misses or loping, just can feel a vibration that is difficult for me to explain other than i know something isnt right still...
anywho, off i go... get to truck stoo and turn truck off. shuts down fine. i turn key back on and use the switches (not cruise control switches, but two other switches specifically for retrieving fault codes. theses are just below the ignition switch) to let me read any fault code flashes. all i get is the check engine light and stop engine light turn on as they should, but when i hit the switch to let the stop engine light flash a code sequence, holy cow it flashes like it is on crack! i couldnt count anything to save my life!
i figured i would try starting the truck, hit the starter button and truck fired up, but reved up to like 1200-1300 rpm, settled down a bit, went back up to about 1000 rpm (like i blipped the throttle, but i didnt have my foot anywhere near the throttle) then it settled down to about 650/700 rpm and idled ok, but again, i could feel a different vibration i find hard to describe.
so i am know waiting for my turn to have my truck looked at by cummins in renton, wa. i am told thursday morning is the earliest they can even loom at my truck! i know things can get busy, but come on, i got to make a living too! so i wait...
anyone know of a good place i can go in the seattle/tacoma washington area to check this thing out? -
Give Terry a call. Really nice guy and he may be able to tell you something to try. Did they reset the throttle sensor after installing the new ECM?
-
give terry a call where and what number? i dont know if the tps was reset or not. i kinda think the replacement ecm was put in and i was told it is ready to go.

finally got some trouble shooting done today...tech found silicone where the wire harnesses plug into the ecm...cleaned that up, no idea how that got there other than the previous place that worked on it...tomorrow finish up troubleshooting and hopefully i will be off and running.

tech got another check engine light during road test this morning. (kinda though issue had been solved) anyways, dont know what fault code was thrown, but based on what has been happening, it is probable to be another 121 code.
so far a new eps sensor, fuel solenoid & ecm has been put on truck and yet still getting 121 code. wire loom was checked and determend to be ok. what else could possibly be causing this code?
engine is a n14 celect -
Probably loose or worn pins inside the connector body of either the sensor connector or the ECM connector of the engine harness. The way the harness wraps around and is p-clamped at the back of the ECM is overdone. The P-Clamps tend to cut through the wires and short them out over the years. Also the harness itself starts to degrade. The copper strands inside the wire start to break down and become brittle. This can create a weak connection inside the wire. The wire will visually look good, but it is broken inside. This can happen anywhere the wiring takes a bend or is under any tension. Your N14 is getting up there in age. We have had a few customer now that have replaced the entire engine harness because of one electrical problem after the other. The wiring is old and weak, brittle and can break easy. You get one thing fixed, and as the tech is repairing that circuit, another is damaged simply because the wiring is moved.
joecitizen Thanks this.
