KLLM does not have a school. You will have to graduate and approved trucking school to be considered. You can call recruiting, to see if the school you are planning to attend is considered approved. Most are as long as they have a national certification or accreditation.

Well sitting here about 50 miles from the house, waiting at the truck stop, to deliver this load and head for hometime. Been out a little over 5 weeks this time and everything has been good. Just ready to get to the house. I'd say, that's the toughest part for me. I just miss so much while I'm out. Freight does seem to be slowing down some as it does this time of year, but my runs are still good. Had a pretty sweet deal offered to drive local or should I say, a couple of days out and back. We'll see how that goes. I wouldn't leave this company unless something much better comes along and seems to be a positive step. Will keep you posted.

Hey newbie, I wanted to thank you for all the insight I've gleamed from your posts into KLLM and trucking in general from a "newbie's" angle. I am going to KLLM's orientation in Jackson day after tomorrow.

I am also orginally from "cajun land" although presently 'bout an hour south of Jackson, Ms.

Hope our paths cross on the road : )

Maybe we will cross paths. It's a big company and a big country though. I haven't even met the Toad or Ledbetter yet and it's been 6 months at KLLM now.
You'll have a good time, so to speak, at Orientation. Donnie, the Training Coordinator is a great guy. As I've said before, don't expect the Hilton, but the hotel is clean. Breakfast is......... well, FREE. That's about all I can say about that. Lunch is provided. Plate lunches aren't bad and gets better as the week progresses. Places to eat, shop, whatever, very close by the hotel. Taco Hell, a local Mexican Joint, Mickey D's and Popeyes are right next door. Walmart on the other side of the hotel and clinic, Kroger across the street. The Do-Nut Shop is down the road a little. Excellent Breakfast and lunches if you have the time. Rooms have a Fridge and a Mickey Wave, decent cable TV, and 2 double beds. You will room with someone else usually. Donnie will pick you up every morning in the "short bus" or one of the KLLM vans. Three days of paperwork, meeting the department heads, listening to policy, don't do's, and what to do's, questions answered, benefit packages, physical, and other fun stuff. You will find out who your trainer is on the last day, and they will give you his/her cell number to get in touch. You'll get your ID, Comdata Card, probably a hat and or T-Shirt, hang around the drivers lounge and meet your trainer at the terminal. Then go out for 6 weeks. If you have to wait a day or so for your trainer to get there, KLLM will let you keep your room at the hotel. The van will come by or you can call the dispatcher and they will send the van to get you to bring you to the terminal. After your upgrade, you can sign out and take the company van from any terminal to wherever you need to go, or hitch along with other drivers who are going to wally world or the chinese buffet. (the china buffet near the Fontana Yard is excellent) After 6 weeks, you go back to Jackson, take your written test (open book) and a road test. The written is based on policy, regulations and safety. You can use your manuals, employee handbook, and all of the manuals they provide for you. Easy, just take your time. Willie the road test guy will take you downtown and around some corners. Just go slow, double clutch, make wide turns and you'll do well. The only thing I can tell you, is that if Willie tells you to "stop the truck", then STOP THE TRUCK, NOW!!! Willie's a nice guy, but doesn't play around. STOP THE FREAKIN" TRUCK!!! Or else pack your bags. You fail, PERIOD!!! Your 6 weeks and orientation were all for nothing. Don't get nervous, by then you will have done enough driving to breeze through it and Willie will walk you through anything, and will help you, but STOP if he says STOP. I don't care if it's in the hammer lane of I-20, stop the truck. Did I mention, Stop the Truck if Willie says so? :biggrin_25523:

One real quick question, newbie... What do you do if Willie says "Stop the truck"?

Ummmm....you might try stopping the freakin' truck...

Unless it is the one day of the month he arbitrarily picks to mess around....(usually a day ending in "never").....

Well sit back, watch TV and enjoy the Free Popcorn. I've eaten a ton of it. If you make a fresh batch, don't forget to turn the kettle off. :yes2557:

I got my trainer right after I posted last, but his truck was going in shop for simple repairs. Simple turned out a little more complicated, so another night stay in hotel. Hopefully the truck will be ready this afternoon and then we will be ready for dispatch.

Very happy so far with trainer I've been assigned. He has over a million miles with KLLM and does not smoke. We talked for awhile yesterday and then he went home for the night.

I don't have a notebook computer right now (SUPER BUMMER), so I'm sittin' at the Richland Library using my other computer, that is ,one of the ones my taxes paid for, lol. I can get on the 'net with my BlackJack cell phone, but it is a bit difficult and slow, even with 3G.
