I would do it asap, 2026 is gonna be a brutal blood bath (more than it already is).
Like I just replied above, I looked into what trades were hot, and what were duds right now in Alberta. Plumbing, Welding, Mason, HVAC, Heavy Duty Mechanic (Dirt, Road, Trailer take your pick) Iron Worker, Sheet Metal are all red hot.
Once I'm settled, I can update with what I'm doing, and how it compares to dump/freight/daycab.
It's finally over!

My dads friend is a union sheet metal worker , does a lot of work in down town toronto working on all the new condos. He’s at over $50 a hr and told me a few years back if he retired now he would have like $3500 a month to live on . But he’s a very cheap guy wouldn’t even drive my dad 15 minutes into a town when we went up to a friends place because he didn’t want to burn the gas in his vehicle
My problem is i have a learning disability, had it all through school and had special ed teachers . I don’t believe they provide that in trade school unfortunately. i’m sure i could learn how to do just about any job it’s just the schooling part is where i’m screwed . I’m thinking about trying to get a town/city job but you don’t make a lot of money unless you can get overtimeLast edited: Nov 3, 2025 at 7:56 PM

They do now actually, just have to have some kind of documentation, and fill out the proper paperwork when enrolling for school, once you have your hours. Honestly tho, I never found anything in trade school hard, except the math in Machinist and Electrical, but it just took extra effort and some formula strategies (IE Write all the formulas out on your scrap paper, before you start the exam). If you did Sheet Metal/Welding/Plumbing/Mason/IronWorker, you wouldn't even have to deal with that, just basic trades math and code book stuff.
Also, don't forget the construction supply places! IE Shoemaker drywall is always looking for drivers, to do Tri-Axle straight truck w/picker deliveries. Icon Shingles is another one. Guys are also making #### good money, delivering the lumber packages to construction sites. Daycab, 48ft flatbed, little forklift on the back.Albertaflatbed Thanks this. -
My buddy went to humber college for his schooling for plumbing and said it was pretty hard . He got screwed over because the place he was working at never bothered to register him as an apprentice and wasnt keeping track of his hrs . the college of trades tried blaming him saying he should have checked to make sure he was registered with them . therefore he couldn’t take the final test even though he completed his final class room and should have had all his hrs . worse part was Doug ford got rid of the college of trades and when he called them to find out what he has to do they said you need to call the ministry because we’re done by such and such date . He calls the ministry and they tell him you need to call the college of trades . he went back and forth with them and finally said if you can find someone who will hire you for 6 months to a year and they will sign off saying you’re ok to take the final test that should be enough. it wasn’t 100 concrete info through just a i think and my friend finally had enough and said f it and now works for a town
Really sucks to waste all those years doing the schooling and getting your hrs just to get screwed over by a company not registering you with the college of tradesCarpenter Scotty Thanks this. -
Yea, that's kinda on him tho. I had the same thing at my first Automotive job back in 2001. When they wouldn't give me my AIT number, I left and found another job. The second place gave me my AIT number, blue book and apprenticeship card. So you gotta be vigilant, with knowing how apprenticeship works and that things are being logged correctly. Thankfully, its all done through online portals across Canada now, so its much less of an issue. I know there was big Drama with the whole college of trades thing, but its mostly sorted now.
You could always just move to Alberta, I mean everyone else is doing it LOL.Carpenter Scotty Thanks this. -
Sadly what happened to your friend is commonplace. Some trade companies can be pretty scummy that way. The worker is a lot more profitable for them at apprenticeship wages.
Being diligent on the registration and regulations is very sound adviceBigHossVolvo Thanks this.
