It's not the carriers, it's the insurance companies, right?

    Are insurance companies driving the "experienced only" bus? Are all carriers who hire and train newbies self-insured? If the answer to both questions is YES, then we wannabes have fewer options than we thought.
    Right? Wrong? Maybe?

    That's a yes and no question.

    Most companies who are self insured use underwriters. They sit down with accountants and lawyers, and pick a deal that makes financial sense to their budget and expectations.

    While it may be true, the liability sets the standard for all new hires.

    The companies are equally responsible.

    It's purely a money saving process. They can hire whomever they want. They would simply have to be willing to pay the bill.

    I do agree with "dance", but if I could add something to it;

    The companies that aren't self insured, must follow stricter guidelines set by the insurance carrier...and there aren't too many insurance carriers that will insure any medium or large trucking companies...the risk is just above their limit.

    Plus the fact that, many of the insurance companies won't allow for students, or to say it another way, drivers with little or no experience in the commercial trucking industry. Which is why many smaller companies require 1-2 years, or more experience in the industry.

    now if you will think back before the econamy got so bad and so many drivers lost there jobs they didnt have so many requirments, and restrictions , but now there are more then a few drivers looking for work encluding the new drivers the unemployed driver pool is enormous and all these comanys find themselves abel to pick and choose at will, likewise with the insurance companys they find themseves in a position to raise rates if a company dosent hire what they want them to hire , its all about money.

    i think as the econamu gets better and all these drivers get back to work and all these good companys cant find drivers to drive there junk all these reqirments will go away rather quickly and the insurance companys will follow after all they wont be abel to make money if they cant write a poicy.

    but im sorry to say its going to get worse before it gets better we have a ways to go before it starts to get back anywhere close to normal, those of us that dont have there own truck are going to find it rough just getting buy, your going to find yourself at the mercy of some company and all will find out how much those companys really think of the driver.

    the insurance compay dosent really control the companys , when they raise there rates all the comanys have to do is say no , if enough do that the insurance comany will change there mind rather quickly, bout like truckers with cheap rates , but that will only work if you learn to say no, same thing with companys they have to have the guts to say no.

    and so life goes on as always the trucking business is everybodys ATM but that is the way it is, if its not a plotician its and insurance company all we can do is hang on till it gets better in about three more years.

    best of luck to all and HAPPY NEW YEAR . SOUTHERNPRIDE :biggrin_25514:

    The insurance industry for commercial trucking can be complicated and expensive if you don't know what you are doing. Yes, there are insurance companies that cover large trucking corporations. Also like someone already mentioned if you are a new driver then the cost for insurance is going to be very expensive because it is such a large risk. This is to be expected as it is the same with anything in the insurance world.

    Maybe you can clarify this for me. It seems that more and more recent driving schools grads are being turned away because of inexperience. From what I've read in the forum, I surmise that this has not always been the case. Maybe I'm mistaken. If not, are insurance rates the driving force behind this? Are insurance companies telling their insureds not to hire new drivers or is there some "comfortable" risk percentage of new drivers that a trucking company can have in their fleet of drivers? Next, what data source do the insurance companies use to rate drivers by demographics?

    It is really just a matter of risk as I am sure you already know. The newer the driver the higher the risk to the insurance company. So all of these companies hiring want to have as low of risk as possible so they are being selective on who they hire. When the company hires an experienced driver they get lower insurance premiums and also they reduce the possibility of hiring someone who might have an accident, etc.
