    For those of you unsure,
The law is slow down OR move over for stopped emergency vehicles, not both.
Sorry to vent but again today had a Driver top a bridge overpass, see a cop on the shoulder and slam on brakes while whipping it into the left lane forcing a car into the median.
To avoid a wreck, if you see this slow down but if there is someone right next to you stay in your lane please.

Maybe he did not see the car and properly slowed down to make sure he was slower and then thought it was clear and moved over.

I guess you have not been in Sasketchewan. Their law is for both.

I also guess you never make a mistake.:biggrin_25510:

The car was even with his drivers window, if he didn't see it he is blind.
Have made lots of mistakes, this is one I see alot.
I guess you have never been here where the law is one or the other.

I have to agree that the "Oh-my-God-a-cop-I-better-slam-on-brakes" syndrome seems to be spreading.

I usually just chuckle to myself.

I drive all 48 states, Alaska and through Canada. I live in Illinois.

I am well aware of laws and such.

I also know about blind spots and cars getting lost.

There are also states that you have no choice but to move over with no slowing down option.

How do you know where the driver is most familiar with?

I drove a tow truck so I have been the guy working on the sides of the road and even in the traffic lanes. Those guys highly appreciate cars and trucks doing one or the other, preferably moving over.

My friend is the chairwoman for a national Mover Over campaign that is just starting up. Her brother was killed working on the side of the road about 2 years ago.

I actually saw a cop point at a car yesterday for not moving over. I just wish that law enforcement would enforce this law!

I did get a thumbs up from a cop in Indy a few months ago for moving over...

Nope, LA RS 32:125 States that if a lane change is not possible then the driver shall slow to a reasonably safe speed.
This was changed in 2009. The previous law called for a 25mph speed reduction.

    Best regards

I watched one cop on the shoulder with his lights on and a car went right by him, he pulled out and I thought he was going to go after the car but didn't. Why have the law if you're not going to enforce it.

On another note, I stopped on 431 in AL when I had a left rear trailer tire blow. I got off on the shoulder as much as possible. Most all of the vehicles moved over while I was changing the tire. However, one van didn't move over, even though there was no one around him at all, so I flipped him off when he went by. Later, when I got back on the road, I got into Columbus, GA and this guy pulls up along side of me and flips me off, so I got out of the truck and mentioned something to him about his mother, fornacation, retardation, and a few other things, I think his kids learned some new words today.:biggrin_2559:

I have always wondered how much to slow down.

So, is hitting a person less lethal at 40 MPH than at 65?
And what about areas that state a 45 MPH minimum?

Seems cruel to me. It just gives them more time to contemplate their fate.

Seriously, I slow down 5-10 MPH (from my current 61-63 MPH) if I can't get over - and that seems reasonable to me.
It does not seem reasonable to slam on my brakes.

I slow down to give every person involved a little more reaction time, but the people on the side of the road have to be aware as well - especially if they choose to conduct business on the traffic side.
Cops talking through the drivers side window - take note! Because that is plain stupid.

There are exceptions, like a repair tech working on a truck and the tech has no choice of where to be.

I try to deal with each situation as needed, and sometimes I have to slow down quickly to remain fairly safe.
Heaven forbid that 4-wheelie tailgating me ends up spam.
    (I so wish)
