Newbies and students with trainers its that time of year again. Truckee scales are calling for chains right now as we speak! Make sure you guys are asking your trainers to not only show you but let you practice some throwing of the chains.

For you new guys who have already gone through your training but not yet have experienced winter make sure you know how to put chains on. Ask at your terminal or possibly a friendly driver will show you how. At the very least make sure you have them on board your truck (its the law this time of year) and make sure they are untangled and sorted out. This will make life a hell of a lot easier for you. I recommend keeping them in a dry box too. Nothing worse than tangled and frozen chains!

Guys here is a link to the web cam at the top of the Truckee Scales. Its snowing!

Good sound advice. I haven't thrown iron in years and never will. Just shut the #### thing down, pour another cup of coffee and listen to the CB for the latest disaster stories of another Werner truck in the ditch.

Very rarely have I ever done it too. For the new guys though you don't want to get caught with your pants down. (oh wait that was a different thread:biggrin_2559:)

One thing you can do that will really help you avoid throwing chains is to keep a few bags of ice melt on board. In the event you need a little extra traction this will help greatly.

New or used kitty litter? :biggrin_2559:

Seriously, hubby told me that Maverick is a "No Chain" company, they shut down in an area if the weather is bad enough there to require chains.

Chains aint nuthin to be afraid of. Just slow it down and take your time and you will have no problems.

You're right, nothin to worry about, I just grew tired of suiting up in a blizzard and throwing frozen chains around, just to take em off a few miles down the road.

most companies prefer that if you use chains, just use them to get to saftey. Some drivers prefer to keep going. Its the discretion of the driver since he/she is responsible for their actions. Best bet is to shut it down for some time.
