Hello,
Has anyone got any experience with or know about the training program at the community college in Connersville, IN? I'm 33 years old now and have thought about a change of careers to truck driving. I've been a nurse 10+ years and getting sick of tired of bedside nursing (Not because of the patients).
I went to Schneider National, however, when I was 21 years old back then there was 20 students per truck and I left before the enforceable date of paying money back to them. Drove around Green Bay, WI for a quick minute. I have thought about trying "again" but to a school where there are less students per truck. They offer employer-sponsored means of tuition, cash up front, and loan. I obviously don't have the money up front but feel that a community college's program might be better since they claim 3-4 students per truck.
I live 10 minutes away which is a positive and feel that I would be more at ease and could sleep in my own bed to decompress after a difficult day of learning.
I have thought about Dot Foods out of Cambridge City, IN as a potential employer. The downside is Ivy Tech like other colleges/universities is closed due to Covid-19. I can wait which is good.
My wife is supportive.
Thanks,
Eric

Dot foods is an excellent choice. Good home time and work schedules.
Dot also has a "warehouse to driver" cdl program.
May not be at all warehouses. I'd rather do the community college route though for expediency.

I've heard nothing but good about them (maybe minor nit-picky stuff). Do you know if you are allowed to take a truck home or does it get parked at the terminal/DC?
Thanks,
Eric

Dot has local/regional/OTR, so maybe OTR drivers can take truck home, but I'm not sure. -

Hi Eric,
I'm also considering Ivy Tech Community College for Class A CDL Truck Driver Training. I thought about the Truck and Bus Driver/Commercial Vehicle Operator and Instructor program at Vincennes University first, but it's too far and my low pay can't afford commuting now. -
