So I've been checking around for the smartest choice on getting my cdl, and talked with someone from Ivy Tech Community College in Gary, IN. They've got a program working with Sage, the next thing she told me blew my mind... 18 week program! I was shocked to say the least, also this is all covered by a grant, absolutely no cost to the student. I'm really not looking forward to driving 3 hours (round trip) to school 3 days a week for 18 weeks but this is FREE. Also does anyone know if I can land a better company going thru such an extensive school?

I was checking on Prime's website, they look very attractive. I just can't believe the Ivy Tech gig is 18 frickin weeks. But it would be free.

I am in a similar situation with you two.
What grant is paying for the Sage training?
I also saw somewhere there is a Ivy Tech/Sage program in Indy. That info may be out of date though. I had not looked into it because the general Sage website made it seem that financial aid was not really an option. If there is financial aid or loans available for this I would really like to know.
My research also came up with the VU program also based in Indy. It is an 8 week program M-F 8:00am to 5:00pm. I talked someone at VU about it. It is no longer PTDI certified but they sill use the same basic curriculum and the program is accredited with the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The cost is $4464 plus CDL permit fees. This school is on the WIA approved training list. I think it is a 320 hr school compared to others which are 160 hr.
This is the route I'm trying to take. However the local person for WIA never answers the phone, returns calls or is in the office when I go down there. Talking to another staffer at WorkOne the WIA program is overextended and they are currently not offering any funds. They couldn't really give me any more information on the WIA because they where not the WIA specific person. This is bad for me because the VU program starts in January and the next one doesn't start til March. And I don't have $4464 in the bank to pay for the program myself.
I hope I can get something going soon. I really want to get out on the road. -
I can't really say too much about the Ivy Tech program, I actually found it by accident on the website ivytech.edu under career training, not academics. I just called the number and left a message. I got a call back from the lady who heads up the transportation, distribution, logistics program and she told me that it was 18 weeks and that it covers 4 courses. I told her I didn't have any money and she said not to worry because it is covered completely by a government grant, she didn't mention in particular what grant it was or how to go about getting it. She did say that I didn't have to worry about any of it and that I just had to get myself to class and they take care of all the details. I hear you about getting on the road, I'm only making $200 a week on average right now. I used to make $950 week so this is tough. I just applied to Prime tonight, I've already got a call back from Driver Solutions but I'm kinda waiting on that, I like Prime and Roehl over Driver Solutions so we'll see what happens. All that is needed for Prime is cost for DOT physical and permit, and you're making money within 2 weeks with a trainer. Unlike going to other company schools where you are stuck in class without pay for like 3 or 4 weeks and then go home for a week and then get picked up by a trainer finally. I think it's only 4 days unpaid at Prime. Then $500-$600 week during training.
ursus Thanks this. -
My personal spot at the moment.
DriveCo in Gary
* They want cash or grants.

Prime pays a little while training..
Need a truck driving job? Prime inc. is one of the fastest growing Refrigerated, Flatbed, and Tanker carriers in the business! Come grow with Prime! CDL Training is available, Prime wants you!
Once your application is approved you will then be scheduled for Prime's 3-day new-hire orientation.
After you have completed your orientation, you will spend 4 to 6 months with a quality selected driver trainer/lease operator in our refrigerated division. During this time, your trainer will work with you to perfect your driving skills and teach you how to become a profitable lease operator.
Prime is willing to advance all students $200 per week in the first 30 days (which will be removed from future weekly pay checks at $25 increments), during this time a student will have already aquired their CDL Class A permit during the 3 day orientation. Then $600 per week or .12 cent per mile will be paid to the student for the remainder of the training, once their Class A CDL has been obtained.
During your training period, you can expect to be out four to six weeks at a time. Once you become a solo company driver expect to be out 2 to 3 weeks at a time (depending upon where you live), with a day off for every week you are out. Once eligible to become a lease operator, you will then be able to set your own schedule for getting back home. The $200 per week advance is available during your training for the first 3 weeks if you are in Prime's school. The $600 or .12 cpm is then paid to the student through the remainder of the training process, which is approximately three months minimum up to 6 months in length.
You will be asked to sign an operating agreement. Due to the high cost of recruiting and training entry level driver associates, Prime requires that you work for them for at least one year from the date which you are first dispatched.
The average Prime lease operator will spend four to six weeks on the road at a time. Lease operators determine their own home time policy and the longer they stay out on the road, generally the more money they are able to make.
As a Prime driver associate, you can live anywhere in the United States and hand pick your own truck. Spouses or passengers are allowed after your training period is complete. -
