Shoot, I used to drive a cab in a major city. The only way to not get beaten/robbed is to stay out of the bad areas after 5 pm. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot. Sooner or later, somebody's gonna get their number punched. And in my area, I see truck drivers doing all sorts of deliveries after 5 pm, in lots of areas that are high crime. Is truck driving one of the most dangerous jobs in America? Yep and it's not just the crashes. Especially the otr guys. Their cabs/drivers are loaded with stuff that can be traded for quick cash/crack and their trailers are too. Hijacking trucks seems like it could be very tempting, to a criminal mind. At least in the taxi we had a radio, on a trigger mike, that had a direct link to the police, through dispatch and the police were highly motivated to protect us in certain areas. Other areas though, we were pretty much on our own. Trucks are an obvious target for hijackers/robbers/whatever. Also, cab drivers could get sort of a network response, where 5 cabs would show up at a crime scene, before the cops even got there. But you know, company higher ups didn't like that. Drivers sure did though! Trucks seem much more isolated than taxi cabs. The whole tough guy image is kind of deceiving. I just think of Reginald Denny. By the way, when we got robbed or shot dead, all we got was two weeks to pay our lease for that day, if somebody filed a police report. Filing that report, incidentally, was usually a huge waste of time and so was waiting for cops to show up. Most seasoned drivers would tell their buddies about it, maybe say some prayers/get drunk and move on. Some guys would quit. Actually, that's where the company got a lot of its employees (drivers were all "independent contractors"). Although, they used to be Teamsters and probably didn't get as many holes shot in them when they were.
