I could see it.
Frankly RAIL has to step up their game, (efficiency/turnaround time/less damages/etc.) but I could see the future of shipping would be regional drivers going to/from rail/ship locations and making LTL or truckload deliveries to the end user. And be within 200-300 miles from home covering a zone for a few days a week and roatating with a regional "squadron".
Only a relatively few longhaul drivers would be needed for true OTR freight, which would be charged at "expedite rates", which would pay the drivers more (hahah) and make more profit for the company to cover the "long distance" wear on the truck.
"Just in time delivery" is a great system for reducing inventories, but sooner or later the labor cost of the shipping schedual itself is going to cause them to re think that system ($5 a gallon got their attention too). Longterm thinkers are probably looking at JIT ver 2.0 right now. (maybe even opening small regional plants closer to the user! OMG jobs not in Mexico! What a concept)

Without naming names. A very large company has asked for supply bids.
Requirements -- Plant be located within 50 miles.
Distribution Centers -- 60 day supplies on hand at all times. And located within 30 miles. Which essentially rules out a DC of this size...unless they provide stamps. -
Hmm I doubt this would be in the NYC area,,, but if it's in PA or CT I'm very interested. (50 mile radius of NYC doesn't get you out of the suburbs)

Rumour is, they may actually start staffing by fall 2010. -
I'm home every weekend and still make 50k, think I'll stay where I am

The information is well received and appreciated.

mmm I too want more per mile, but I want more miles for the bigger Check.
I worked for a lady not that long ago who had her truck on with a company that had me pulling JBH Loads. I had to go into 2 different JBH terminals and they were full of Drivers waiting for loads to get moving. Most claimed to been there several days waiting, not making money. 0.42 at 0 miles is still no pay. -
J.B Hunt dose not pay 42 cents per mile.they came to 36 per mile and you will get 1500 to 1800 miles.I think go to work them should take good look at some other trucking company and get the miles you need.Is what you put in the bank that matter.I work for them a L.P.work thier the frist week i made 380 the next week i made 47 dallars and the next week thier i $230- the 4 week i was $467.-Do NOT THINK ABOUT IT,they will not get you the miles to take home any pay.I work thier 5 week..I am looking for job now. Sucks. I got a lead for a local goverment job (highway department) but I can't apply because I'm away from home. Bennies and pay are insane (your tax dollars at work) but applications are in-person only.

I was considering employment with J.B. until a recruiter called me. I was everything but pleased. He asked if I was still looking for work and I told him yes. Well I have a very good job for you. "Humor me!" He asked what if I was looking for anything in particular. Told him what I was looking for and he told me well, we don't have OTR anymore and I don't have anything in the way of a company position. Hasn't been a company driver from my area in some time now. Then what do you have? I have this "great" lease deal you can't beat! Really now? He fed me all the BS blah blah blah, and I told him well I wasn't interested in a lease because of the economy. That taking a leap of faith and because of your so called "promises" I would fall flat on my face and loose everything. (At this point his attitude starts to kick in) Well it's all I have. Well it's not something I'm willing to risk. He kept trying to feed me more BS on why it was "so good" and told him I just want an OTR or Regional company position and he hung up on me. You MFer! If I knew where he was I would show up just to strangle his fat ###! I filled out an application with a site called class A drivers and no where on it did I check the box for intrest in a lease. So if he didn't have a company position then why in the hell did he call and waste my time with that BS "sales man" pitch that he knew I wasn't gonna take in the first place? Once more, do I look like I have a lolli pop tattooed on my forehead? Screw J.B. I wouldn't want to drive for them anyway as every one of their L/O's was either on their way to a terminal to turn in the truck or on their way home to clean it out to turn it in.
