Im just now getting into the trucking industry. I drove in the military and have been looking for companies that accept that as experience. So far JGR (J. Grady Randolph) is the only company that will. Anyone out there know anything about them or ever worked for them? I put in for TMC, Schneider, Mcelroy, JGR and Maverick I was denied by all of them except JGR cause of an open container ticket in 2011. I wasnt even driving the vehicle but it is what it is Im just lookin for some advice.

What do you mean by it cant be amended? There's not much I can do about it I paid the fine and its on my Motor vehicle report. I looked at QC before. Im more interested in something hauling flatbed and I hear JGR is a better company.

Try Cypress Truck Lines. It's a flatbed company out of Florida, but has a terminal in the Carolinas. That ticket is a real problem, but keep trying. Check Careerbuilder website for local stuff and Carolina Cargo for coast-to-coast reefer running just to get your start.

If you can get on with J Grady Randolph jump on it. There a good company, they know your name instead if being just a truck driver. They have recently upgraded there fleet, I have a friend who drives there and he loves it.

Thanks I talked to them today. I have a road test Monday and if I do well I will stay the rest of the week for training.

The problem with military experience is that most companies do not believe it's comparable to OTR driving. Most believe it's on base driving and nothing to do with long haul. And in most cases their right. I came out of the Navy with civilian experience and OTR military experience and I had a hard time explaining that I drove coast to coast hauling heavy equipment driving military equipment. In the Seabees we had a lot of regular class 8 tractors with 3 axle 60 ton lowboy trailers. If you list what you drove try to list the equipment as close as you can to what the companies know. Don't use like M123 designations or whatever and just try to commercialize the best you can.
Also you might find companies that are friendly to your military service just because you were in the military. They like the discipline and the fact that most will not complain very much and just get the job done. Just be sure you check out all the benefits and don't go to a bad company just because they like the military. You might also find a problem with other drivers. I have run into this problem where they thought I was given special treatment and they felt it was unfair. Just be careful how you present yourself. They are entitled to their opinions and of course you never want to flaunt any extra benefits you may receive. Use your military experience the best you can and it's best to leave that between management and yourself. Good luck.LVS OPERATOR Thanks this.
