2nd datalinks being a PITA. I've even seen loss of power or ground to a module manifest itself with a datalink fault. Usually communication error.

Are you saying that one end of the bus terminates inside the engine ECU so that there will be only one resistor plugged into all of the external wiring? If you pull the plug from the engine ECU and measure resistance across yellow/green and get 120 ohms, most likely the entire bus is properly terminated when the cable is plugged into the ECU?

That should be cleanly cut with each stand capped with headshrink tubing to prevent any future shorts

Would any of you know exactly where the 2nd J1939 data link terminated resistor is located on the 2019 Peterbilt 579 Paccar MX-13 engine (I found the one behind the instrument cluster)? Please share …greatly appreciated!
