Hi-all.
I have a '69 White Freightliner COE Tanker with a 8V71 DD. The jake on this engine dose not like to run right. If I shift into low gear 3-4 Low and stay under 1500rpms then I can get the jake to work, to a point. My leg Is getting tired. I'm going to jack up the cab. Check all wires and connections. Check the jake solinoids. I heard theres a button on top to push with the engine idling?? Check all wire/spade connectors on the head and to look for oil leaks. I thinks this is the right start. Oh-The mech said to check the volt's. It might be a 24v, on a 12v system??

From what you are saying I would say, you need to check the free play in the stop leaver, with the throttle lever in full fuel, also set the governor gap and wracks.
You are correct about checking the Jake solenoids operation, the pass threw connectors, they break, and the seals will leak. You want to set the valves, injectors, and Jake's. When set up properly the Jake's will go on every time you remove your foot off the throttle.
I worked on those engines for a long time and do not remember ever seeing a 24 volt solinoid but I Know they made them. -
Ok,
I've been told the racks good. The governor is not set and you could run up the rpms If you don't keep an eye and an ear out. I can do the eyeball and basics, but not confidant to mess with the rack and govner yet. -
Got any pics of the truck?

The governor has to be set first before you set the racks, You bring it hear with a governor gasket, and 2 dozen beer, and I will set it up for you.
