Theirs slick and really really slick
theirs slick snow and sticky snow
Theirs different positions on the jake
theirs bobtail and maxed out at gross
    level land and 8% grade

Sometimes I use a little jake, Sometimes none

This is not learned overnight. It takes many years of winters, mountains, and ice storms
take your time, if your in doubt don't use it

This is dead on. Experience tells you when you can use it.

My two year terror was my old man teaching me how to handle it and unless he was sleeping he was complaining the whole time and that lasted for 6 years till I got in my own

ABS retarder/jake cut out output appeared in 90s, it may be just 12 ore 24v output to relay that disables jakes, it may be used for ECM aux input programmed to disable jake. Later, in 2000s J1939 is used to disable jakes.

To be sure u need Wabco ore Bendix diagnostic software to read ABS paremeters. Unfortunatly a half of trucks on road got no retarder cut-off function.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've been erring on the side of caution and not using it during slippery conditions, my truck however doesn't allow the jake brake to work when the clutch is even touched and I tend to rest my foot on the clutch when in down shift situations anyhow, I also don't like it when I'm empty, makes the downshifting jerky when you get down to the lower gears. I'm flatbed so I'm usually loaded pretty heavy, usually 75,000 plus. Thanks ya'll.

Most of the trucks on the road only have ABS speed sensors on 1 drive axle too.

So do I need to keep a broom handy?

I had to, got too much humor out of that.
