2002 C15 KW T800 475 hp Just got my truck back from an over head adjustment. Had some other rear end work done as well. Seems like the Jake brake comes on a little right as you step into the pedal. Push a little farther and it goes completely away. Doesn't matter if switch is on or off or position 1 2 3. Would improper Jake adjustment do this. I am ignorant as to how a jake is adjusted and what the effects of out of adjustment would do. Thanks

Sounds like improper adjustment. Most engines have a separate housing that bolts down over the rockers for the Jake Brake. The Jake housing will have adjustable pistons that push down on the exhaust valves. If they are too tight you will hear funny noises. If it seems wrong to you, don't hesitate to bring it back. If something is wrong the longer you wait the worse it will get.

If the racks on a 2 cycle Detroit are not adjusted properly they will do that.
You have to tell us what kind of engine, and model, you have!
But mainly if it does not sound right take it back. If the adjuster is not locked properly it can do the same thing.

I posted this question under the tread that's already here....I have seen and heard guys leave their Jake on even when shifting to get that nice growl...My question is does this damage the motor or jake at all? It can't be for any other reason, than that sound between shifts.

I read that engine manufacturers do not recommend this as it can cause engine damage, they call it "jake shifting." Unless you double clutch, I don't see how you can stop it from coming on. I find it annoying, as it cuts the throttle for a split second when you tryi to go through the gears, especially if you're speed shifting the lower gears.

On some of the older cat engines you could have a smoke & a coffee between shifts because they were so slow in dropping rpm's. So I would leave the jake on to shift sooner.
