It's funny how markets are different for different types of trailers, I rarely can even get a good load of KY, so I pretty much stopped going there

Yep. Not a lot of experienced dry van/reefer drivers want to go into Pittsburgh. Too tight, docks too small, traffic is the absolute pits. Whereas we flatbedders usually hit steel mills and processors that (generally speaking) offer enough room to get in and sometimes even park overnight.

I HATED Pittsburgh when I dragged a box. With a deck, meh.

I hauled a load of it out of FL that paid a reasonable rate for FL freight, but it had lots of edges that needed padding, otherwise my tarps would have been ripped. I used to tarp my Summerville, SC loads years ago with sod tarps, so it was easy, but I don't always carry them now. Got too much other equipment on the stepdeck for the machinery I haul. So it's not all going to be tarp friendly from Hardy. After deducting $100 for tarping (my minimum tarp charge), I don't see the rate is worth it, but .... everybody has their own standards.

You're so right Ruthless. So many guys just don't get it. I can get $400-450 or more just running a local load right here around Charlotte, so why would I want to spend all that time and labor, plus my tarps that take abuse, on somebody's cheap load, especially when it's that cheap from the shipper, who obviously, has no respect for the truckers. Can't even tarp on their property.

Smart reefer operators have to add in the costs of running their reefer for the loads they haul and we flatbedders need to add the costs of tarping or any other labor or time incolved and THEN work up our rate per mile. That's the way I do it. Plus stop pay, tolls, extra pay for bad areas, bad traffic, etc. It's all added on.

I got offered a 45k tarp load today from the
Twin Cities up to Thunder Bay,On.
    350 ish miles for a whopping $500.00
I politely laughed at the Lady.
She got kind of offended and said they did have some negotiating room.
    OK I tell her.
Double your rate for a start and we will negotiate the extras from there.
    "What extras?" She asked.
    A 4' tarp will cost you $100 and 8' is $150.
"But I don't have anything close to this in the load"
Hold on Mam we're not done yet.
Border crossing is an extra $75 also.
"But I need to move this for $600?"
Look at a map Lady, then look at the weather channel. Good Luck.

Cheap freight. Not saying l wouldn't haul it if l was dead slow and had no load at the other end and it got me home snd just wanted to pad my account a little. But l wouldn't be happy about it and I wouldn't make a habit out of it. Probably try not to admit it to others much less brag it up lol
BTW l want to live in your world where you drive in and out of a customers in an hour fully tarped. Plus unload in an hour too lol l pull drywall on occasion and it can take more than a hour to load or unload even with a rolltite much less a flatbed with a tarp.

With the little flatbed work I've done (mostly years ago) I'd bet the ranch that backhaul wouldn't come off the truck the same day.

You got that right! These cheap load brokers need to hear this more often and maybe some of them will actually learn how to rate loads or at least what a trucker should be getting.

No just need the cheap haulers to finally go tits up. Have the loan companies finally have enough. Take back the units that are so upside down and cut their loses
