I have a recruiter from JB Hunt trying to put me on a Family Dollar dedicated postion. I would be unloading the truckwith those roller things. He said the loads come out of Raton, New Mexico, I live in Albuquerque. He said I would go to Dallas for a 3 day orientation, and probably be on w/ a trainer for a few days (seeing I have 4 yrs. driving, but no OTR exp.) He said I'll be home 1.5-2 days a week out for 5.
He said it pays about $900/wk. Anyone ever work a similar run? Need your advice. I picture myself somwhere in Colorado, trying to unload this truck under poor conditions. My Caution light is on...![]()

I once worked for a food warehouse that did something like that, back in the '80s. We were union members and got paid by the hour. About $12.50 + overtime and meals. On overnight runs they paid motels and meals. I don't think JB will pay motels and you can't pay for a meals with a pre diem allowance, unless you only eat once a year with your tax refund money. But if the hourly pay is fine with you, go for it. I wouldn't do it on a mileage bid, too much snow and ice. Also those trailers get really hot or cold when you've got 4500 boxes to put on those rollers. Good luck.
Keep in mind, I'm spoiled. I've been trucking 42 years and I've seen the swing towards third world standard working conditions and pay.Last edited: Sep 1, 2008

If this is your last and only option. Then you have no choice but to work for them. Personally, I would avoid them like the plague. I hate to admit, I worked for them last year for about 2 months. There trailers are crap. I always had problems with them. If it was not a door beat to crap. It was a wheel seal leaking or a bad tire(s). I always check my tires air pressure but I never had tire blowouts til I came here. Always check the registration paper on the trailer. I picked up a few that were expired.
I had three blowouts in a month. They pinged my DAC/USIS for the first one. Which brings me to the next subject. They are a DAC happy company. They will put anything and everything on your DAC. Just because they can will be the reply you get from them. They are a very difficult company to deal with. They will treat you like dirt and you don't know nothing. Just hold the steering wheel driver and shut up. They don't care.
Sounds like they a painted a nice picture for you. But if your caution light is flashing in your head, take heed and run like hell the other way.....There are a lot better companies out here. Good Luck with your search.

When I worked for BoWevil Express I was on the Family Dollar dedicated account out of the West Memphis DC. I made decent money and every trip was out and back pulling their trailer. Sometimes you had to pick up a load for them coming right back to the DC. Everthing at the DC was drop and hook for the dedicated drivers. All the stores had to be fingerprinted using the rollers. Some of the stores can be a real pain to get into. Especially in El Paso and the Denver area. If you can stand the lifting its not a bad job. This is the time of year they will run you hard. After Christmas it slows down. Family Dollar stores are only closed 2 days a year, Easter and Christmas. Any other time they will scedule deliveries. I did it for 2 years and then someone underbid them and they lost the account, but thats trucking. Good luck.
