Yes, you have to buy your chains and locks, etc. The theory is this: YOU buy them, you take CARE of them. It works this way in every other industry we have been involved in. $700 is chump change compared to what I spent on equipment to groom dogs (which will destroy your wrists, in case you are wondering). You can, with your FM's agreement, put it "on account" and pay it off over a period of weeks. I know this causes dissent among the rabble, but for us it really isn't any big deal. JCW had $30,000 and more invested in his tool kit as a mechanic. I had roughly 1/3 of that as a groomer.

 

He's in Knoxville, at his fuel stop, parked for the night. Got there about 2.5 hours ago, decided to do laundry and shower and fuel and go in the am. It was time for his 10 anyway, and this was a good place to stage for tomorrow.

 

Just because YOU pay $85/hour in labor doesn't mean the tech sees that much of it. They don't even see a quarter of it.

 

Week 0.5 Solo: Pick up truck in Lewiston. PU Easton, ME; Del: Bethlehem, PA 915 miles.
Week 1 Solo: Bethlehem-Pittston-Concord, NH; Concord, NH-Methuen, MA-Murfreesboro,TN; Murfreesboro, TN - Ochelata, OK; Reset. Ochelata, OK-Broken Bow, OK - SpringMo (not paid yet, didn't scan properly); 2185 miles.
Week 2 Solo: SpringMo - Pauls Valley, OK; Pauls Valley, OK - Saginaw, TX - San Antonion, TX; San Antonion, TX - Austin, TX - Curtis Bay, MD (delivers Tuesday, 9am). 2340 miles plus the unpaid trip from last week.

Looks pretty ok so far. Wonder what comes out of MD.
