I'd be a little upset about needing a permission slip from mommy( your service manager) before they would hire you.

I understand there is a relationship between the two companies ........ But it's not right .

It may be different in your area. Where I live it is very obvious that trucking isn't what it used to be. Truckers don't make the same money they used to. Trucks are costlier to repair and break down more frequently. The average customer has less money to spread around for repairs. Because of all that our dealer rarely charges full rate for anything anymore. We give lots of discounts to keep our customers. Our overall profits are messily. We have not seen pay raises for about 5 years now. Boot and tool allowances are a joke. I honestly see this career on a down tread in the trucking industry as far as mechanic pay and overall shop profitability. One thing that really kills a lot of dealers is all the warranty work they must do, as we all know warranty does not pay well at all. Dealers get spread too thin sometimes trying to keep up with all the tooling and training for all aspects of the truck, including different engines. If you work somewhere where they focus on just the engine I think that would be better in regard to the whole truck. Like others have said, the grass isn't always greener... This is a personal decision, there is no right or wrong answer. Cummins just seems to have a brighter future in general, compared to the trucking industry. Just because you work at Cummins doesn't mean you stuck working on ISX's for the rest of your life. I am sure there is enough variety to make the job the interesting. Good skilled tech generally have no problem finding work. At the end of the day, you work to make money. Go where the good money is.
