Used to be 10 years and it was required by DOT. Has it now changed to 3 years of past employment? New one on me!

I have a different situation. I want to apply for a new job after the first of the year. I have been at my present job for 10 years and know my exact start date. When the new company want to call and verify my present employer work history They may give me a bad rep because their pissed that I am leaving . They have been known to this. Its a small family owned company. Iv seen drivers give a two week notice then my boss say good bye we dont need you. Then when new employer calls for a job verification they will say he dont work here and hang up on them. This may sound made up but Iv seen it happen.
Not to brag on myself but I am the best driver they have and Iv been told that by company heads over me. So I know they will be mad when I quit. Over all a good company to work for and they treat you good but when time to leave they will but a knife in your back. The money and love is just not there anymore. Time to go. What can be done about this?

They can not do that. You need to call bureau of labor and industry in your state. Explain to them your fears and they will tell you your rights. If they do not follow the law, file a legal complaint. They will get investigated and their practices will come to light.

The more "intelligent" companies won't say anymore out of fear of a lawsuit. In fact, many of them also prohibit their current employees from serving as "references" for former coworkers, for the same reason.

In other words, those companies do go into anything about the former employees job performance, attitude, etc. they just verify the objective facts, dates of employment, position held, and salary range, etc.

Based on your post, it's obviously different in the trucking industry, huh?
