Hello board! I've decided to post this in the New Forum, considering it's been a while. I have a dilemma and I'm hoping to get some suggestions/referrals/advice from this board.
I've been out of the driving business for over 10 years. I still have my Class A, with tanker, and passenger endorsements. I will be getting my hazmat ASAP, but you all know it takes about two weeks minimum to complete the background check once fingerprinted.
I have been working in health care fot about the last 6 years, as a CNA, and have been pursuing my RN degree (what I thought was my TRUE calling). Well, I made a CRUCIAL mistake in Sep. of 2011, where I signed in the Patients Care Plan for care that was not done, and the Attorney Generals office got involved, and investigated, and I was charged with a misdemeanor-B of Falsifying Business Records. I was sentenced on 12/12/2012 to 3 years probation, and will not be able to work in Health Care for the duration (bad rap).
The only other way I'll be able to make a living is to go back to driving. I have 4.5 years OTR, and 4 years as a local tanker driver, when I resided in Atlanta. I moved back to NY in 2000, to be close to family, and discovered my TRUE calling, which was nursing, but my career in health care has ended!!
Like I said, I've just been sentenced to 3 years probation for my *crime*. That means I technically can't leave Suffolk Co., NY without my probation officers approval! I don't suspect going into Jersey, or Connecticut will be a problem, as long as I'm home every night, and can make my appointments (2nd, and 3rd Tues. of the month from 2-8PM).
Can anyone assist me on HOW to go about getting a *local* job here on Long Island without * current* driving experience??? I've applied to a few companies, and they've ALL denied me because I don't meet their criteria. I KNOW I can drive!! It's like *riding a bike*, as they say. It won't take me long at all to get back in the saddle! I just need a break!!
I've been on unemployment for over a year waiting to see if I still have a career in Health-Care. I know now, that I have to go back to driving. My only other alternative is to try to work 2 minimum wage jobs, just to make ends meet!! NOOOO! Ain't gonna happen! I kept my CDL for this exact raeson.....What if?? I just need a break right now....Any suggestions???

Other's have said on here that you can take a job on the dock for a company and then work your way into a driving gig. Search for all the LTL's in your area and pound the pavement. You are going have to sell your self as to why you should be hired on by a company. It is my experience that it is easier to sell your self in person as opposed to a written resume and application.

Good Luck, I hope it works out for you.:Courier:

Thanks! Just read through that thread. Seems like a good approach. I went to fill out # applications in the last two days. Talked to both *recruiters* on the phone, and had very *high* expectations!!.....Only to get to the terminal and find out that I don't meet their criteria of having 6-12 months experience in the last 3 years.....ARGH!!! I drove for over 8 years!!! It's painful when they'd rather hire some rookie, fresh off the boat, than someone that will take about a WEEK to get used to driving a rig again!! I took a *refresher course* last year, and I STILL drove well!!! Oh well!!

Just curious, but how is it a 'bad rap' since you admitted to falsifying records in your post?

I admit, I did the crime. I don't dispute that. I'm willing to suffer the consequences. What I did was wrong. I admit it. I've been in health care for a long time though. Trust me when I say to you though that this kind of practice goes on and on. From Home-Health_Aides, all the way up to MD's! The health-care industry is short-staffed, over-worked, and underpaid! SOO much pressure to care for TOOO many people in a days work. Listen....I'm NOT justifying what I did...I know it was wrong, but when you've been in the health care field as long as I was taking *shortcuts*, is acceptable....almost *expected*!! SUCKS!, but that's the true nature of things....I was just one that got caught. NO excuses! Maybe the fact that it was *election season* had something to do with it?? I dont know! All I know is that for the next 3 years (and probably FOREVER). I'll never be able to work in health-care again!!
So, now I ask this board.....HELP ME PLEASE!!

Ill do that. My first appt. is on 1/08/13. Ive been calling the probation office trying to get to see my PO earlier, to discusss my employment possibilities, but haven't received a response. I'm kinda desperate right now, as I stated, my UI will run out on 12/30. This is seeming to be a LOT harder than I anticipated!

Really don't know how anyone here can help you. If you can't get a local job because it will be very difficult with you being off the road for 10 years. Maybe ask your P/O if you can drive OTR to get at least 6 months recent experience.

I have a couple of questions.

1- How is it that you got caught phonying for work you never did...and it's a bad rap? If you did not get caught you'd still be doing it, right?
2- How will you drive for a company and not leave Suffolk? Which is what you say is the condition
    of your probation?
3- Don't you think a new company will be squeamish about hiring someone with a dishonesty conviction?
4- I don't necessarily think it is the driving part that the company did not hire you

Sorry to be blunt, but you put it out there on a web forum
